This safari takes you off the beaten path to explore The Selous Game Reserve which is the largest game reserve in Africa.
It is often seen as one of Africa’s last true wilderness areas – its savannah spans as far as you can see. On this safari you get to explore one of the best sights within the game reserve; the Rufiji River, a gigantic river with a high density of crocodiles and hippos. Together with the Great Ruaha River, it creates a river delta, making for formidable game viewing and an exciting boat safari.
We leave early in the morning from Dar es Salaam and drive to Selous arriving in time for lunch at Selous Impala Camp. After lunch, we embark on our first safari on this large reserve in search of animals like elephants, zebras, gazelles, impalas and the rarest of all; the African Wild dogs. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Selous Impala Camp.

After breakfast, we depart for morning and afternoon game drive at the Selous Game Reserve. This Game Reserve was named after a prominent European explorer; the late Fredrick Selous and the reserve has since been declared a world heritage site by the UN body UNESCO. We’ll come across hippos, buffaloes, wildebeests and zebras all which attract a diversity of predators including 4,000 lions, as well as leopards, hyenas and crocodiles. Some rarer species include the African wild dog, of which 50 percent of its population live in Selous, as well as the sable and puku antelopes. Selous is also a bird paradise with over 350 bird species in the miombo woodlands, and the Rufiji swamplands.
In the afternoon, we will go for a boat ride in the Rufiji River. Crocodiles, hippos and hippos can be seen here as well as other animals as they converge to quench their thirst. Crocodiles take advantage to hunt their prey and we might be treated to sights of animal action if lucky. We then head to Selous River Camp for dinner and overnight stay.
