Climbers looking for an off the beaten tracks experience will enjoy ascending Mt Kenya on this route. With accommodations available on fly camps only, trekkers get a unique wilderness experience. The challenging route comes with breathtaking views of the landscape as it is the most scenic route.
We leave Nairobi at 6.30 am and drive through Nanyuki town to the Sirimon Park gate (2660m). Although we could continue driving, we opt to walk to Old Moses Camp ( 3300m) for better acclimatization. The 9km hike takes about 4 hours and we arrive at the camp in the late afternoon. The crew has already prepared dinner and we retire early to our bunkbeds in the dormitories.

Today we leave the camp at 8.30am and continue our hike through the moorland (Teleki Valley) characterized by many varieties of Seneca and Lobelia to Shipton’s Camp (4200m). Lunch will be taken on the way. The 14km hike takes about 6 hours. Overnight will be at the Shiptons Camp just below the 3 majestic peaks Batian, Nelion and Lenana.

Today is the highlight of our trek as we attempt the summit! We rise very early, usually around 2:30 am, and begin our ascent under the starlit sky. The climb to Point Lenana (4,985m), the third-highest peak of Mt. Kenya, takes about 4–5 hours depending on pace. It is a steep and challenging trek, but the reward is beyond words: watching the sunrise from the summit with sweeping views over the jagged peaks of Batian and Nelion, the vast Kenyan highlands, and even glimpses of Kilimanjaro on a clear day.
After celebrating our achievement, we begin our descent toward the breathtaking Lake Michaelson at 3,950m, nestled in a spectacular circle below cliffs. The hike down takes about 3 hours, bringing us to our camp by the lake shore. The rest of the afternoon is for well-deserved rest, photography, and soaking in alpine beauty. We spend the night in tents under the starry mountain skies.

After breakfast, we continue our descent along the scenic Chogoria route. Today’s trek takes around 5–6 hours as we drop from the alpine landscape to the lush montane forest. Along the way, we pass enchanting features such as Vivienne Falls, bamboo forests, and open moorlands that slowly give way to thicker vegetation. By early afternoon, we reach the Chogoria Gate (2,950m), and check in at Annabas Hotel for a comfortable evening and a hearty meal after our days on the mountain.

This morning, after breakfast, we board our vehicle for the journey back to Nairobi. The drive takes about 4–5 hours, passing through fertile farmland, tea and coffee plantations, and vibrant local towns along the way. We arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon, marking the end of our incredible Mt. Kenya trekking adventure.
