This route starts from Timau to Naro Moru. This is the north side of the mountain. The slope is gentle and because the peaks on Mount Kenya line up east to west the views from the north give you the impression you are trekking into a whole mountain range.
We leave Nairobi in the morning after breakfast and drive through the fertile farmland of the central province, passed coffee and pineapple plantation to Nanyuki. Our destination is Regency Mt.Kenya View Hotel at the edge of the Ndare Forest. The location offers picturesque views over the Mount Kenya peaks on clear days. The afternoon can be spent at the at the swimming pool or used for a visit to Ndare forest, a lush indigenous forest at the northern foothills of Mt. Kenya. Azure pools glisten at the bottom of waterfalls and 200 years old trees stretch into the canopy supporting a rich variety of bird and animal life.

We leave Nanyuki and drive northwestwards crossing the equator and on to the School of Adventure (70km), the base of our Mt. Kenya trail at 2900m. Here we meet with our crew and after introductions we start the climb at 11.30am. The 5 hours hike takes us to Marania campsite at 3300m in the moorland, leaving behind a forest inhabited by a variety of wildlife. Overnight will be in a fly camp.

After breakfast we continue with the climb heading for Majors Camp (4000m). Our path will be surrounded by plenty of Senecia and Lobelia. Lunch will be at Allans point. The hike takes about 6 hours. Our night will be spent in a fly camp at the scenic Major’s Camp site.

After breakfast, we proceed with our trek, passing the scenic Terere and Sendeo peaks. The 6 hours hike takes us up to 4600m reaching the alpine dessert and on again to Shiptons Camp at 4200m. The descend to Shipton’s Camp is a bit challenging and care must be taken not to slip. Overnight will be at the Shipton ‘s Hut at the end of the Mackinders Valley with the 3 “Maasai” Batian, Nelion and Lenana towering above us.

Today we start our final ascend of Point Lenana at 4.00 am. We have to pass a steep scree until we finally end up at the Simba Cole at 4600. Here me make a short break before we tackle a steep rocky section where might even have to use the hands to assist the feet. A sunrise we are at the summit. The view is breathtaking as the sun rises over the eastern plains and toss Batian and Nelion in a golden light.
Finally, we descend through the Austrian Hut and Mackinders camp for dinner and overnight. While having dinner we watch the sunbirds and rock hyraxes around us.

Our Mountain adventure has come to an end. We descend to the Metrological station where our driver is waiting for us to take us back to Nairobi. On the way back we can opt for a lunch. In the late afternoon we arrive back in Nairobi.
