Marangu, also referred to as the ‘Coca-Cola’ route is the most popular and oldest approach for climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. Serviced by huts only, climbing on this route can be done in 5 days but an extra day for acclimatization is recommended. The huts are equipped with bunk beds and provide a certain degree of comfort for those are not used to fly camps.
After breakfast, we transfer to Marangu Gate (1km) where our hike (8 km) starts at an altitude of 1850m after an introduction to our crew. Today’s hike takes about 4 to 5 hours through the natural forest to the Mandara Hut at 2774m. Those who feel strong enough can hike to the to the nearby Maundi Crater rim which provides spectacular view of the Kibo Summit. Dinner and O/night will be at the hut.

Today’s hike takes a little longer (6-7 hours) over a stretch of 12km. This will lead us from the shadows of the natural forest to grassland where for the first time; we can get a view of the sprawling plains below and the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi above us. After a lunch break at "Kimangi Marangu", which was once an important rain making site, we walk on to Horombo Hut at 3550m in the midst of Giant Lobelia and Groundsels. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the Hut.

This day can be used for leisurely taken hike passed the Zebra Rocks at 4000 m and for the very fit on to the Mawenzi hut at 4600m). The views over the Mawenzi towering above us and the Kibo massif ahead of us are magnificent. After a lunchbreak we return to Horombo for dinner and overnight.

We leave Horombo Hut after breakfast at 7.30am for a hard day’s hike of 13km. This will take us through the alpine dessert, leaving the moorland behind at the last water point. The hike ends at the Kibo Hut and at an altitude of 4750m. Here, we shall have a chance to rest and enjoy the view over the saddle to the majestic Mawenzi Peak before we retire early to bed in preparation for our midnight ascend on Kibo.

After a short night and a hot drink, the summit challenge begins at about 1.30am. The path gets gradually steeper towards Gillman’ss point (5685m) from where we can watch sunrise over Mawenzi in the east and the magnificent ice fields in the north. After a short break, we then proceed along the crater rim to the Uhuru Peak (5895m) reaching there at about 9.00am. After our summit photos, the next destination will be Kibo Hut where we will have lunch before descending further to Horombo Hut (3720m) where we spend the night.

After breakfast and a final glance at the Kibo summit which we have conquered, it is time to start on the final leg. The 6 hours hike takes us from the moorland into a beautiful natural forest characterized by giant ancient trees. After lunch at Mandara, we will get to the Marangu Gate (1800m) to end the tour at 1.00-3.00pm depending on our speed. Here we will be awarded certificates for a successful climb and bid your crew goodbye before proceeding to Nakaara Hotel for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast we meet up with our driver/ guide for transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or with your onward safari arrangements. (to be booked in advance)
