Overview

This tour lets you explore the rather harsh and hostile environment in relative comfort and style.  The accommodations are rustic and stylish at same time.  With 2 nights in most of the places the daily driving distances become comfortable.  Local guides are the mediators between yourselves and the indigenous people and are very ready to share their knowledge of the area.

From meeting the Samburu and Turkana people on the shores of Lake Turkana, seeing the endemic wildlife of Samburu reserve and a visit to the renown Olpejeta Conservancy for an experience with the last northern white rhinos.

Day 1 Arrival and transfer to Hermosa

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the evening, a Kibo Slopes Safaris driver / guide will be waiting for us for a transfer to Hermosa Hotel in the leafy suburbs of Nairobi for an overnight stay

Day 2 Drive to Baringo

After early breakfast we set off at 8.00am driving on the Naivasha / Nakuru highway with a brief stop at the Rift Valley view point.  The 270 km drive takes us past the Rift lakes of Naivasha, Elementaita, Nakuru and Bogoria to the Tumbili Cliff lodge at the steep cliffs of Lake Baringo.

We arrive for a late lunch and after settling in we undertake a boat ride on Lake Baringo.  We find fisherman in their local handmade balsa boats.  Numerous water birds call the lake their home.  We also find hippos and crocodiles. Our boats man attracts the Fish Eagles with a bait of small fish. For dinner and overnight we return to the lodge.

Day 3 Lake Baringo boat ride, drive to Mugie Ranch

Today after breakfast, we leave Tumbili cliff, cross the Rift Valley floor and climb the escarpment to the Laikipia plateau. We arrive at Ekorian Ranch for lunch and after settling in undertake an evening game drive.  The ranch is one of numerous conservations project which mitigate the human wildlife conflict and try to protect Kenya’s rich wildlife heritage. On our game drive we find Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s hartebeest, (which are endemic to the area), big cats, buffalo, elephants, reticulated giraffe, storks, and birds of prey, which are just a few of the wonderful creatures that roam Mugie’s plains and forests. Dinner and overnight will be again at the Ranch.

Day 4 Mugie Ranch

Today we spend a leisure day at the ranch.  We do morning and evening game drives, and relax between them at the swimming pool or go for a camel ride. Mugie has a lot of activities to offers.  Even a golf course is available at a fee. With its open savannah, dotted with iconic acacia trees, scrubby bush and olive tree forests stretching to the foothills of the Larogi plateau, Mugie is diverse and home to some of the threatened and endangered keystone species and provides for them a safe and secure environment to thrive in.

Day 5 Drive to Desert Rose

We start very early in the morning and drive further North. The 200km drive take us up the Loroghi Plateau where we stop at the Rift Valley view point. As we descend the plateau the farmland gives way to the savannah plains where Samburu community grazes their cattle.  We stop on the way for lunch break and arrive in the afternoon after a final rocky ascend the Desert Rose camp at the edge of the Nyiro Forest reserve. Dinner and overnight will be here.

Day 6 Samburu Cultural Encounter

Today after a leisurely taken breakfast, we visit a Samburu homestead, usually inaccessible to outsiders but for Desert Rose guests Samburu people make an exception. Cultural visits to the Samburu community enlighten and give captivating experiences on how to track animals on the ground. Visits to their local home steads (manyattas) and acquire knowledge on the various uses of the plantations surrounding the community, some of which are used medicinally.

After lunch we can take a short walk to the forest. The vegetation gets denser as we climb until it eventually turns into a fully-fledged rainforest, accompanied by all the joys that they bring. The flora and fauna are incredible, monkeys rush between trees and they provide a welcome respite from the heat. Our final ascent to the main peak is amply rewarded by views down to the scrubland below.  For dinner and overnight we return to the camp

Day 7 Drive to the Jade Sea, The Lake Turkana

After a leisurely taken breakfast we continue our drive up north with packed lunch.  As we approach the southern shores of lake Turkana the savannah gives way to a rocky barren land dotted with black volcanic stones.  Soon we arrive at the Turkish waters of Lake Turkana. We arrive for lunch at Loiyangalani.  Loiyangalani is the Samburu name for trees.  Oasis lodge is nestled amongst duoma palms which give shade and make the high temperatures bearable. In the late afternoon, we visit a Turkana Village where we are entertained to a traditional dance as the sun sets over the desert lake. For dinner and overnight we return to the lodge and may cool off in the natural water fed swimming pool.

Day 8 A day at the shores of the Jade Sea, Elmolo Village

Today we explore the area around the lake shore.  We have a chance to visit and learn about the traditional lifestyles of the El Molo Village which is the smallest tribe in Kenya. They are mainly fishermen and hunt crocodiles. A myth in the community says that the crocodile recognizes the hunters from far and they rather hide than attack. The visit ends with a boat ride to their shrine on an adjacent island. After lunch later in the afternoon we visit the rock paintings on the slopes of Mt. Kulal and as the sun sets we visit a Turkana village where we are entertained by a traditional dance. Dinner and overnight will be again at the Oasis Lodge.

Day 9 Drive to Samburu National Reserve

We have an early breakfast and return to South Horr and drive on to Ngurunit in the Ndotto mountains.  Here we stop at Camp Ndotto for lunch and continue further down south to Samburu game reserve.  In Laisamis we meet the tarmac and drive the last 130 km in reasonable comfort. In the late afternoon we check in at the Elephant Bedroom camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 10 Samburu Game Drives

Today we have a whole day for game drives in the reserve. The park is renowned for its variety of wildlife species which have adapted amazingly well to the harsh and hot climate of the area. The unique species include the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk, Beisa Oryx, and the Somali Ostrich. We return to the lodge for lunch.  At this time the temperatures hit their peak and the animals look for shade under the trees. Samburu National Reserve covers 104 square kilometers and the Ololokwe Table Mountain forms a dramatic backdrop towards the north. Samburu is also home to elephants, buffaloes, lions and leopards. Dinner and overnight stay will be once again at Elephant Bedroom camp at the banks of the Ewas Niyro River with amazing views of wildlife coming to quench their thirst.

Day 11 Drive to Olpejeta Sanctuary

Our North Kenya expedition is almost coming to an end but on the way back to Nairobi, we must visit Olpejeta Conservancy. A 170km drive along passing Mt. Kenya takes us to the Mutara Camp bordering the Olpejeta conservancy. We arrive in time for lunch and use the afternoon for game drives. Olpejeta is arguably the best example of Kenya’s private conservation efforts. It is also world famous, especially because it hosts the only two female African white rhinos living in the world!

Not only the rhino population has been successfully reinstated after years of poaching but also other species such as plains game, elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes just to name a few thrive in the area. Here we will get an interesting insight into the work of conservation projects, such as the conservation of rhinos and a rescue station for chimpanzees from West and Central Africa. All in a wonderful landscape - between the mountain range of Mount Kenya on one side and on the other side the wooded slopes of the Aberdare Mountains!

Day 12 Return to Nairobi

Today we have an option of an early morning game drives and return to the camp for a late breakfast.  We pack our bags and with packed lunch return to Nairobi for our evening /night departure or another overnight in Nairobi
