This 13 km day hike on the Kenyan slopes of Kilimanjaro offers magnificent view of the mountain and glance at the tropical rainforest flora and fauna in the area. A nature guide not only helps us to master difficult passages but also shares his knowledge with us about the area, its people, environmental destruction and conservation of the remaining rainforest patches.
We meet at the Kibo Slopes Garden Resort at 7.30am in the morning. After introduction and briefing from our guide we drive 10km to the starting point. The first 8km hike along the banks of the Nalemoru River in a canyon formed over 1000 of year by the raging waters during the rainy season, ends at a scenic waterfall where we enjoy a barbeque lunch while watching baboons and with some luck colobus monkeys. After lunch we leave the river banks behind us and walk through farmland to the Tanzanian border at 2050m. A short 3 km hike through a rain forest takes us back to Loitokitok town and on to the Kiboslopes Garden Resort.
