The land of a thousand hills is an excellent destination for off-the-beaten-track cycling, with almost endless trails and roads crisscrossing the territory. Exploring Rwanda’s countryside on a bike is an authentic and rewarding way to interact with the rural population, with a huge dose of natural beauty. Feel the wind and breeze of Lake Kivu as you cycle along the Congo Nile Trail, the most popular trail in Rwanda running along the beautiful shores of Lake Kivu from Gisenyi through Nyungwe Forest, Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s stunning rolling hills and encounters with the local natives to the southern coasts of Rusizi district.
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, we will be warmly received by the Kibo Slopes representative and transferred to Mythos Hotel for an overnight stay. The evening is free to relax, settle in, and prepare for the adventure ahead.

After breakfast we begin the day with a 2-hour cycle on the Mount Kigali trail, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes. Afterward, enjoy lunch in Kigali before visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a sobering yet powerful experience where guests can learn about Rwanda's history and resilience. Return to Mythos Hotel for a relaxing evening.

After breakfast, transfer to the starting point at Mt Jali for a scenic ride through rural villages and lush tea plantations. Today’s journey covers 49-52 km (4 to 6 hours), with a lunch break in a local village, providing insight into rural Rwandan life. Arrive at Sorwathe Guest House, nestled in the tea plantation, for an overnight stay.

The day's ride takes you on a picturesque 49 km journey (5 hours) toward Lake Ruhondo, passing through terraced hills and vibrant farmlands. Enjoy a peaceful lunch in a local village before arriving at the lake, where a short 15-minute boat ride will take you to Ruhondo Beach Resort.

Start the day with a serene boat ride across Rwanda's Twin Lakes. After the ride, embark on a scenic 28 km (4 hours) cycle through rural villages toward Kinigi, home to the headquarters of the Volcanoes National Park. After lunch at Kinigi Cottage, relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Cycle through the picturesque countryside from Kinigi to Kabari, stopping for lunch at the historic Imbabazi Orphanage, once the home of Rosamund Carr. During her time she witnessed Rwandan independence, was a friend of Dr. Dian Fossey and fled for some months during the genocide. When she returned home she turned the farm into orphanage Imbabazi of Mudende, which takes care of and shelters displaced children and genocide orphans. The route covers 49 km (5-6 hours). After lunch, our car will be waiting to transfer us to Gisenyi, a lakeside town on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Today's ride follows the scenic Congo Nile Trail, a 43 km (5-6 hours) stretch offering breathtaking views of Lake Kivu and lush green hills. The trail passes through stunningly beautiful scenery including Nyungwe Forest National Park, Rwanda’s famous rolling hills, the clear waters/ beaches of Lake Kivu and glimpses of the distant DR Congo. Besides the scenery, you get to see how the locals go about their daily business in their coffee, banana and tea plantations. We will have lunch on the way in Nkora village one of the villages along the way. The trail then leads through coffee and banana plantations to Kinunu from where accommodation on the shores of Lake Kivu is available. We arrive at Rushel Kivu Lodge for evening rest and overnight.

In the morning, take part in a coffee tour, learning about Rwanda’s famous coffee-growing regions. A wonderful ride on the shores and hills above Lake Kivu, interacting with the local communities and enjoying the scenic views, you pass a coffee washing station before you reach Musasa where you can have lunch at Musasa Homestay which offers meals to bikers and hikers. Bike through the scenic Coko Valley renowned for its yams. In the valley the trail continues next to the Coko River where we will meet our car at Kibingo Health and drive to Kibuye.

A day of rest and exploration in Kibuye. Take a boat trip to Napoleon Island and Amahoro Island, where you can enjoy the natural beauty and spot local wildlife. Spend the night at the peaceful Cormoran Lodge.

In the morning, drive through scenic landscapes toward the Gisovu Tea Plantation, passing Mount Kibuye and the Kiziba Refugee Camp. Enjoy a packed lunch at Gisovu before cycling 50 km (6-7 hours) through the lush Nyungwe National Park, home to one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. A vehicle will be waiting for us at Hanika to transfer us to Maravilla Eco Resort for a well-deserved rest.

Today’s ride takes us 40 km (5 hours) along the Kibogora Trail toward the Uwinka Park Headquarters. En route, stop for lunch at Gisakura. This ride offers an unforgettable experience cycling through the heart of the Nyungwe Forest, home to rich biodiversity. Spend the night camping at Uwinka Campsite, surrounded by the sounds of nature.

In the morning, embark on the famous Canopy Walk in Nyungwe National Park, where you can take in panoramic views of the forest. Afterward, drive to Nyanza, stopping for lunch en route. Nyanza City, the historic capital of the Kingdom of Rwanda has much to offer. Charming and beautiful hilly landscapes surround the city, and hikers can have an authentic experience of traditional rural life in small communities that mainly live from agriculture and livestock breeding, without being staged for visitors. In the afternoon, visit the King’s Palace Museum, a royal residence of Rwanda’s former monarchs.

Cycle 22 km along the Royal Trail. The ‘Royal Trail’ is a unique, outstanding trail in Africa. On the 10 km route, hikers experience, in a compact manner, a combination of history, culture and Rwandan rural life. This trail combines the former Royal Palace, the National Art Gallery,
built in 1959 by Robert Quintett for King Matura III Rudahigwa; the former King’s
Palace built in 1932; replicas of historic royal palace; the Ankole-cattle-breeding shop; bistro and park; mausoleum of the Kings of Rwanda and Christ-Church built by Belgium missionaries in 1935. We combine it with the Gatagara trail, a 15 km long trail that passes through a long and wide valley without communities.
The valley is characterized by small-scale agriculture with horticulture and livestock in individual farms. Halfway there is the largest facility for people with disabilities in East Africa Gatagara Handicrafts School with workshops, schools, hospitals, homes and a church, as well as a pottery shop and a gastronomy open seven days a week. We cycle back to the hotel for lunch and afternoon rest.

After breakfast, transfer by car back to Kigali. Spend the afternoon exploring the bustling Kimironko Market, where guests can shop for local crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. Enjoy lunch in Kigali before settling in at Hellenique Hotel for the night.

Today, cycle the Kigali View Ride, which takes you along the Bumbogo Trail and through the Mageragere Hills, offering panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. The ride lasts about 4 hours, with lunch in a local village before returning to Kigali. On this day we enjoy a rooftop dinner at Ubumwe Grand Hotel as reminisce on the past 15 days of adventure through the thousand hills of Rwanda. We retire to the hotel for overnight.
