Mt Kenya Fixed Departure

Tour Highlights

Mt. Kenya stands in the central Kenyan highlands and is the second-highest mountain in Africa. The 5,199metres Batian summit is a difficult technical climb but the Nelion (5,188m) and Lenana (4,985m) peaks present a good challenge for any fit trekker. A trek up Mt. Kenya not only offers one of Africa’s finest mountain climbing experiences but is also an ideal preparation for a Mt. Kilimanjaro climb.

Itinerary Details

Day 1: Nairobi – Mt. Kenya
Our Safari guide picks us up from a hotel in Nairobi and drives us (200km) to Naromoru through the fertile farmlands. After registration and introduction to the crew, our hike starts at 2600m. It is an easy trek through the forest with an amazing view of the Northern Naromoru valley. It takes 3 to 4 hours to get to Met station at 3,000m where dinner will be served and overnight.

Day 2: Met Station - Teleki Hut
The days hike-trail is longer and steeper, (1200m spread over 10 km) which can take 5 to 6 hours. After about an hour we get past the forest belt into the moorland. Amidst the heath and moorland are Giant Cabbage Groundsel and Giant Lobelia Deckenii. We stop for lunch at scenic rocks known as picnic rocks. After lunch, we hike up to Telek Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Teleki Hut – Point Lenana – Shiptons Camp
Today we will be up early in the morning at 3.00 am to start our ascent to Point Lenana. After a short flat stretch, we trek over frozen scree with torchlight destined for Austrian Hut at 4790m. We take a break then follow a ridge all the way to the summit. As the trail narrows, we will need both hands and feet. The steel cables beside the path are not necessary but reassuring. The sun will rise around 6.am as we soak under its warmth having a spectacular view over a drink before descending via the Simba Cole to the Shiptons camp for lunch, rest and overnight.

Day 4: Shiptons Camp – Old Moses Camp and back to Nairobi

To prevent altitude sickness, it is advisable to drink 3-4 litres of water per day except on the summit day.
