Tour Highlights

This Safari provides a glance to the gems of Kenya Northern parts. It is a mixture of culture, landscapes, hikes and wildlife. Accommodations are sometimes very basic, depending on what is available in an area. The tour starts with Samburu National Park and takes you all through Northern Kenya to Sibiloi National Park and finally across Lake Turkana to the palm fringed beach in Eliye Springs.

Day 10: Drive via Gaas to loyangalani with packed lunch, FB Palmshade Hotel

Day 11: Visit Elmolo Village, rock paintings, sunset Turkana dance, FB Palmshade Hotel

Day 12: Early morning drive to Moite for Boat transfer to Eliye Springs, FB Elliye Springs

Day 13: Optional visit of central island, FB Eliye Springs

Day 14: Transfer ( 70km) to Lodwar for flight to Nairobi, BB Ole Sereni

Day 15: Depending on flight optional activities and transfer to airport for departure

Itinerary Details

Day 1 - Nairobi- Samburu
We are met and greeted upon arrival in Nairobi and transferred to our hotel for an Overnight. Depending on our arrival time we can explore the cities attraction or even opt for an afternoon game drive in Nairobi National park.

Day 2 - Samburu Game Reserve
Today we start our adventure as we head up north towards Samburu. We arrive at the lodge just in time for lunch. After lunch and a short rest, we proceed for an early afternoon game drive at the Samburu National Reserve. This park is renowned for its variety of wildlife species which have adapted amazingly well to the harsh and hot climate of the area. The unique species include the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk, Beisa Oryx, and the Somali Ostrich. Dinner and the overnight stay will be at Samburu Lodge.

Day 3 - Samburu game drives
After breakfast we embark on another day of game drives. We only return to the lodge for lunch. At this time the temperatures hit their peak and the animals look for shade under the trees. Samburu National Reserve covers 104 square kilometers and the Ololokwe Table Mountain forms a dramatic backdrop towards the north. Samburu is also home to elephants, buffaloes, lions and leopards. Dinner and overnight stay will be once again at Samburu Lodge.

Day 4 - Drive to Maralal
Today we have a long drive through the dry but scenic Samburu district. As we leave the park, the sacred Samburu mountain just outside of Archers Post in Northern Kenya called Mt Ololokwe dominates the landscape. Just before the mountain we turn left to the Maralal Route C79. We will be treated to great views and amazing scenery like the massive Leng'ei Rock and the astounding views of the Ewaso Nyiro River at Nkoteia. We arrive for a late lunch in the busy town of Maralal the capital of the Samburu district. Later in the afternoon we visit a Samburu Village before dinner and overnight at the Ngari Hill Eco Lodge.

Day 5- Drive to Ngurunit.
With packed lunch drive north through the Poro Highlands with spectacular Views over the Riftvalley to Baragoi and on to the Ndoto Mountains. At Ngurunit we arrive for late lunch and use the afternoon to visit a Rendille village and the famed natural water slides at river Ndelewai. Located at the border of Samburu and Marsabit counties, the area is surrounded by one of the most dramatic mountain ranges which are part of the Mathew ranges marking the doors to northern Kenya.

Day 6 - Drive to Marsabit
We can opt for a sunrise walk before breakfast, bid farewell to the local guide and drive to Marsabit. Marsabit town located on the slopes of Mt. Marsabit is an oasis an otherwise very dry and arid area. We arrive for lunch and use the afternoon to explore the National Park. The densely forested area rising to an elevation of 1700m is home to variety of wildlife, such as elephant, buffalo, greater/lesser Kudu, hyena, Grevy's zebra, dik-dik, reticulated giraffe, lion, leopard and baboon. The most scenic spot is lake paradise, a crater lake whose water is shared by wildlife and local cattle and sheep.

Day 7 - Chalbi Desert – North Horr
Today we leave early and leave the slopes of Mt. Marsabit and drive through a landscape strewn with lava rocks before crossing Chalbi desert. The vast open desert plains are amazing. The safari takes us through Kalacha, a pleasant surprise of an oasis in the otherwise barren countryside. Here we stop for lunch and photos before proceeding to North Horr. North Horr is last larger settlement before the Ethiopian border. We spent the night in the Catholic Guesthouse and are treated for a private dinner with a local family. For the sunset we drive to the nearby sun dunes to marvel at the wonderful colors the setting sun produces.

Day 8 - Drive to Sibiloi. FB Alia Bay Guesthouse
After breakfast again we shift location and drive 170 km with lunch boxes to the northern shores of Lake Turkana - The Siblioi National park. The landscape is sparse. Occasionally a lonely acacia is seen.

As we approach the lake the landscape changes to a wilderness made up of the lake shore, savannah, volcanic terrain and riverine forest. Lake Turkana is the biggest of the Rift Valley Soda Lakes - its enormous proportions and striking colour has led it to be called the Jade Sea. The lake is located in the far northern frontier of Kenya and is just less than 270 km long. Before we settle in the Museum Bandas we pass by a Dassanech Village in Illeret.

Day 9 - Koobi Fora – Mt. Sibiloi
Sibiloi National Park was gazetted in 1973 and is recognized as a world heritage site because of its rare flora and fauna and the numerous fossil sites. The wildlife includes rare dry country large mammals such as grevy zebra, gerenuk and oryx. The shores are an important refugee for crocodiles and soft shelled turtles. Today we visit the Koobi Foora museum and excavation sites as well as Petrified Forest on the flanks of Mt. Sibiloi where a 12 million year old forest lies buried due to a volcanic eruption. The renowned Archaeologist Family Leaky christened the “Cradle of mankind”

Day 10 - Drive to Loiyangalani.
Today we leave the park and drive through the rugged, arid northern terrain to Loyangalani a melting pot of the various different pastoralist communities of northern Kenya. As we approach the town we see already the lakes shores from far. The town with a population of about 6000 people takes its name from the Samburu community which means “Place of many Trees”. Although the number of trees were significantly reduced due to deforestation, the trees around our Guesthouse spend a pleasant shade. For the sunset we drive to the lake shore and watch the fishermen bringing home their catch.

Day 11 - Loiyangalani Activities
Today we visit the Desert Museum, which was opened in 2008 and was built against the backdrop of the greenish shining lake, also named Jade Sea. Here we get some information about heritage of the tribes that live near the Lake, namely Rendille, Turkana, Samburu, Pokot, Watta, Gabbra, Dassanach and very important El Molo tribe. Later on we visit the Elmolo village right at the shores and get a glimpse of the lifestyle of the Elmolo people, the smallest tribe in Kenya, numbering not more than 500 people. The Elmolo are fisherman and hunt the crocodile. The myth says that the crocodile recognize the hunters from far and rather hide than attack. After lunch we take an excursion to look at the rock paintings in the area. As the sun sets we are entertained by a group of traditional Turkana dancers.

Day 12 - Boat transfer from Sibiloi to Eliye springs, FB
Today our great adventure comes to an end. WE will be transferred to Lodwar Airstrip about an hour and half drive for flight to Nairobi and further a transfer to JKIA for International departures.

Day 13 - Eliye springs
Today we have the option to visit the Central Island National Park (entry fees and boat transfer payable direct at the Resort) located 15 km away from the coast of volcanic origin, this island has three enormous craters inside: the pink flamingo crater, the crocodile crater, which here reach a considerable size, and the tilapia fish crater. But we also can opt to stay at the resort, swim in the warm turquoise waters, and take stroll along the beach or rest under the shade of the palm trees.

Day 14 - Flight to Nairobi
Today our great adventure comes to an end. We will be transferred to Lodwar Airstrip about an hour and half drive for flight to Nairobi. At Wilson airport we will be picked up and taken to our hotel for an optional dinner and overnight.

Day 15 - Nairobi
Depending on the time of our flight, we can opt to see the city, do some shopping or visit the Daphne Sheldric Elephant orphanage, Giraffe Center or Karen Blixen Museum. Even an early morning game drive in Nairobi National Park in search for the rhinos to capture last of the Big Five on camera is possible. Finally, we are transferred to the airport for departure.
