Overview
Experience the magic of northern Ethiopia as we journey to Lalibela, home to the awe-inspiring Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela carved deep into volcanic rock. We hike through scenic highlands to the hilltop sanctuary of Asheten Maryam Monastery, explore the mystical cave church of Yemrehana Krestos Church, and connect with local culture through authentic village visits—all while enjoying breathtaking landscapes and rich spiritual heritage
Tour Plan
After breakfast we take a mid-morning flight at 11:45 hrs to Lalibela, arriving in time to begin our journey into one of Ethiopia’s most iconic cultural destinations. Upon arrival, we transfer to our lodge, the charming Panoramic View Hotel Lalibela, where we settle in and enjoy lunch with sweeping views of the surrounding highlands.
In the afternoon, we begin exploring the extraordinary Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela, a remarkable complex carved directly into volcanic rock. These centuries-old churches remain active places of worship and offer a deep spiritual and historical experience.
After our visit, we return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, we set out for a rewarding hike to the hilltop church of Asheten Maryam Monastery, perched high above Lalibela. The hike (or optional mule ride) takes us through scenic highland landscapes, offering panoramic views and a chance to connect with the local way of life. The round trip typically takes 3–4 hours, depending on pace.
We return to town for lunch before continuing our exploration with a drive to the remarkable Yemrehana Krestos Church, located about 1.5 hours each way from Lalibela. Built inside a cave, this beautifully preserved church predates Lalibela’s rock-hewn structures and is renowned for its unique architecture and setting. We return to our lodge in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight.

This morning, we enjoy a more intimate cultural experience with a visit to a nearby traditional village, where we gain insight into the daily lives, customs, and traditions of the local community.
After the visit, we transfer to the airport for our 13:30 hrs flight to Addis Ababa, marking the end of our time in Lalibela.
