Overview
Journey into the heart of ancient Ethiopia as we explore the legendary city of Axum, home to the towering Axum Stelae Field and the sacred Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion. We then venture into the dramatic landscapes of Tigray to discover the remote Tigray Rock-Hewn Churches, including the breathtaking cliff-top sanctuary of Abuna Yemata Guh, combining rich history, spiritual heritage, and unforgettable adventure.
Tour Plan
We take a morning flight at 08:35 hrs to Axum, one of Ethiopia’s most important historical and spiritual centers. Upon arrival, we transfer to the comfortable Sabean International Hotel and check in before heading out to explore.
Our first visit is to the remarkable Axum Stelae Field, where towering granite obelisks stand as silent witnesses to the ancient Aksumite Kingdom. After lunch, we continue to the revered Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, believed by many to house the Ark of the Covenant. We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, we begin our scenic drive toward Hawzen in the Tigray region, passing through dramatic highland scenery and rural villages. The journey takes approximately 5–6 hours, with stops along the way.
We break for lunch in Hawzen before continuing to explore some of the fascinating Tigray Rock-Hewn Churches, known for their remote locations and ancient religious significance.
By late afternoon, we arrive at the stunning Gheralta Lodge, nestled among striking rock formations. We settle in, enjoy dinner, and take in breathtaking surroundings.

Today we delve deeper into the extraordinary spiritual heritage of Tigray. We visit several of the region’s historic churches, including the iconic Abuna Yemata Guh, dramatically perched on a sheer rock face. Reaching Abuna Yemata involves a challenging but rewarding climb, offering incredible views over the Gheralta plains. Along the way, we encounter ancient frescoes and centuries-old traditions that remain alive today.
We return to the lodge in the afternoon for some rest, followed by dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, we depart Gheralta and drive to Mekelle, the regional capital of Tigray. The drive takes approximately 3–4 hours, offering final views of the dramatic landscapes.
Upon arrival, we transfer to the airport for our 10:10 hrs flight to Addis Ababa, marking the end of this unforgettable historical and cultural journey.
