Tour Plan

Day 1 Arrival, drive to Hunters Lodge

Upon arrival on a morning flight, we will be picked up at the airport and transferred to Four Points Sheraton Hotel for late breakfast. Then we drive southeast along the main highway between Nairobi and Mombasa. After about 160 km and a 3 - 4 hour drive we reach the Hunters Lodge, which was already considered a stopover between Nairobi and Mombasa in colonial times. This classic property was built by John Hunter in 1958 and has been restored to its former glory by Mada Hotels. The lodge is set in 25 acres of lush gardens and is a bird lover's paradise with over 100 species of birds in the vicinity of the lodge.

Accommodation: Hunters Lodge

Day 2 Drive to Chyulu Hills

After breakfast we drive to the gate of Chyulu National Park and with a ranger to the entrance of the longest cave in Africa with 11.5 km. The cave system consists of lava tubes. We explore 1 km of the Kisula cave system. Gloves, good shoes and headlamps are recommended. The cave tour takes about 1 hour. Then we drive t0 the 1750, high-altitude picnic place where we open our packed lunch and then hike about 3 to 4 hours to the camp site on the top of the chain of hills (2000m) with our gamekeeper. When we arrive the tents are already up and dinner is being prepared. From here we have fantastic views over the Yatta Plateau to the east, the Amboseli Plains to the west and Mount Kilimanjaro to the southwest.

Accommodation: Tents

Meal Plan: D B

Day 3 Chyulu Hills Hiking

Accompanied by our Maasai guide, we hike on narrow paths through the hilly bush land. In the meantime, dense rain forest is growing in the craters of the extinct volcanoes. Depending on the season, zebra, giraffe, buffalo or eland can be found in the Chyulu Mountains. The hike through the landscape leads up and down through pathless terrain - the first test of our fitness at between 1,800 m - 2000 m. This area is mostly uninhabited and serves as a grass reserve for the Maasai pastoral people when the pastures in the plains have been grazed and dried out. Again we have beautiful views of Kilimanjaro on clear days. Around noon we meet our vehicle again and after a lunch break we drive through the plains to an original Maasai village. We receive a friendly welcome and move into our huts, which are modeled after the Maasai Kral but are equipped with a shower and toilet. In the late afternoon we take a sunset walk with the Maasai warriors and learn more about the Maasai way of life. For dinner we will be entertained with a traditional song and dance.Walking time approx. 4 hours; Descent 300m, driving time 2 hours.

Day 4 Drive to Amboseli

We have a wonderful day of safari ahead of us. After a sunrise breakfast we drive about 45 minutes to Amboseli National Park. The animal world is awakening; it smells like damp earth. Antelopes and giraffes nibble on the tender green acacia shoots, elephants wander to the water hole, herds of buffalo roam across the plain. Depending on what we spot, the morning game drive takes about 2-3 hours. We drive to our camp for lunch. We spend the warm midday in the shade by the pool and we are already packing our things for the mountain climb. In the late afternoon we drive back to the park, a good time to get big cats in front of the photo lens! We can stay a long time at the waterholes and watch the herds of animals constantly coming and going.

Accommodation: Kibo Safari Camp

Meal Plan: B L D

Day 5 Amboseli Game drives

Full day at Amboseli National Park. Depart for an early morning game drive. Relax by the pool after having a leisurely breakfast. Rest of the morning at leisure. Lunch and afternoon game drive follows. Dinner and overnight at Kibo Safari Camp.

Day 6 From Nalemoru Gate to Sekimba Camp – 2625m

After breakfast we drive to the customs clearance in Kenya and on to the entry point to Tanzania. After completing the exit and entry formalities to be filled out by hand, we drive to Nalemoru (2,020 m), the starting point of the mountain ascent. The mountain guide and the escort team await us here. We register in the big mountain book and then it finally starts. The first part of the route leads past fields, which are followed by the rainforest belt, which is very narrow on this side of the mountain. We go gently uphill. Without much effort we reach the tree line and the Sekimba Camp (approx. 2,625 m). Most of the time the tents are already up and the team is waiting for us with a hot cup of tea.

Accommodation: Fly Camp

Meal Plan: B L D

Day 7 From Sekimba Camp to the Second Cave – 3480m

The second stage leads through moorland up to the second cave (3,480 m), where we set up camp. It's a bit steeper uphill today than yesterday. But we really have time and can walk very slowly. We reach the camp around noon and, depending on our strength, we climb a little further in the afternoon to then return to the camp. "Walk high - sleep low" is the motto.

Walking time approx. 4 hours; ascent 855m.

Day 8 From the Second Cave to the Third Cave – 3935m

An ideal day for acclimatization. The stage is short, we climb again only moderately and have time to enjoy the view of the landscape below us. Our goal is the third cave (3,935 m). We arrive at noon and accordingly have a quiet afternoon, which we spend in the vicinity of the camp. The same applies to today as we did on the days before - ascend a little further and return to camp.

walking time approx. 3 hours; ascent 455m.

Accommodation: Fly Camp

Meal Plan: B L D

Day 9 From the Third Cave to the School Hut – 4715m

We start early and hike steadily uphill. The landscape is barren and stony; only scrubby bushes grow here. Our destination is the School Hütte (4,715 m), which we reach via a steep slope. It's drafty and cold up here. Don't forget to fill the thermoses with warm drinks! Dinner will be served early this evening; we slip into the warm sleeping bags because the night is short.

walking time approx. 6 hours; ascent 780m

Accommodation: Mountain Hut

Meal Plan: B L D

Day 10 Summit day! Gilman's Point, Uhuru Peak – 5895m

After a short night and a small breakfast with tea/coffee and a few biscuits, we set off at around 12:00 a.m. to conquer the summit. We also pack our thermos flask and our summit catering, which consists of biscuits, nuts and chocolate, in the backpack. First we cross diagonally from the hut to the main route, which we reach below the Hans Meyer cave. An increasingly steep path lies ahead of us, the few kilometers stretch for hours in serpentines, the total climb, which takes about six hours, leads over ash and rubble to the 5,681 m high Gillman's Point. Here we enjoy the sunrise and the magnificent view of the Northern Ice Fields in good weather. For those who are doing well, after a short break the not so steep, approx. 2-hour final stage, mostly over snow and scree, takes place to the 5,895 m high Uhuru Peak. In the morning light we stand on the roof of Africa and can finally understand the meaning of the name Uhuru (freedom). The descent follows the same route to Kibo Hut. After the lunch break we descend in about three hours over the ever-extending Kibo saddle to the 3,700 m high Horombo hut.

walking time 12 - 13 hours; ascent 1,180m; descent 2,175m

Accommodation: Mountain Hut

Meal Plan: B L D

Day 11 Descend to Marangu Gate; Drive to Moshi

Today's stage leads past the Mandara Hut (2,700 m), where we will have lunch, to the Marangu Gate (1,860 m). We enjoy the descent through the rainforest: the nature is lush, the plants grow huge, lichens hang down from the trees and a small stream often gurgles next to the path. In Marangu at the gate, the certificate will be issued after successful summit ascent. We say goodbye to the escort team and drive to a cozy lodge in Moshi. We move into our rooms and look forward to a warm shower and a cold beer! We can spend the rest of the afternoon as we wish. The lodge has a spacious garden and a beautiful pool.

travel time approx. 1 hour; walking time 5 - 6 hours; descent 1,860m

Accommodation: Aishi Hotel

Meal Plan:
