Break free from the bonds of ‘normal’ on our 12-day biking adventure as we travel from Nairobi in Kenya to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. We bike alongside wildlife grazing the plains and camp with local families and villages along the way. You will pass beneath the highest free-standing mountain in the world, Mt Kilimanjaro. Spend time game viewing in Amboseli National Park and the turquoise blue and green water of Lake Challa, then cycle through the cool rain forested, rolling hills of Usambara Mountains before ultimately dropping down the tropical Indian Ocean coast where we spend some relaxing time in the spice island of Zanzibar and finally some relaxing days on the white sandy beaches.
We arrive in the morning in Nairobi and after introduction we drive 220km to Ambosli National Park. We can opt for lunch on the way. In the afternoon we arrive at the Sentrim Amboseli Camp. We have time to assemble our bicycles and discuss with our guides the days ahead. Dinner and overnight will be at the Sentrim Camp with the backdrop of Kilimanjaro.

Today we keep our bikes parked and visit Amboseli National Park, which is particularly known for its large herds of elephants. For lunch we return to the camp and undertake another game drive in the afternoon until the sun sets over the western slopes of Kilimanjaro. In the evening we inspect our mountain bikes again and give them the final touches in preparation for next morning ride.

After breakfast at around 8 a.m. we cycle to a Maasai village, where get to know more about the way of their life before we continue uphill through the Maasai land to the Tanzanian border at 2000m. From there we enjoy a fantastic view of the Amboseli National Park and the snow-covered Kilimanjaro towering above us. After a lunch break we will have a 35m downhill ride to the border town of Loitokitok.

After breakfast we cycle to Tarakea, clear with the customs officers and cross the border into Tanzania. Then a downhill ride on Murrum road takes us to Lake Chala. Lake Chala is one of Tanzania's hidden gems. The turquoise blue and green water are fed exclusively by the glaciers from of Kilimanjaro. The scenic lake is surrounded plants, trees and animals. The Lake Chala Safari Lodge was built on the edge of this mystical Lake. We enjoy the serenity of this romantic piece of the African bush and stay here for dinner & overnight.

Today the bikes are first loaded onto the car. After breakfast, the journey continues
down south in direction to Same, a little town along the busy Dar es Salam road. Here we leave the tarmac road and drive to Kihurio for an uphill challenge of 1360m over a steep 20km stretch. Before we change to our bike we have a lunch break. As the sun sets we arrive at the Mambo View Point Eco Lodge at 1850m for dinner and overnight. The views from here are breathtaking.

The Usambara Mountains are home to a special ecosystem with about 100 animals and over 830 plant species and is among the 25 areas with the largest species diversity worldwide. With a bit of luck, we can find horned Chameleons, colobus monkeys, horned owls, the critically endangered Nicoll's weaver bird, and particularly rare butterfly species in the forests. The mountain climate is pleasant, which was already noticed by German colonial rulers who left numerous relics and buildings worth seeing. We cycle through untouched most fertile nature and enjoy a pleasant climate on our way from the Mambo View point to Irente Cliff Lodge.

After breakfast we leave our lodge and cycle through the pristine rainforests of the Usambara Mountains Mombo. The 35 km section is mostly downhill with 1100m and some slight uphill of 200m. From Mombowe we cycle on a rather flat terrain next to the Highway for another 25km for a late lunch at the Rock Hill Restaurant. We pack our bicycles and drive for 15km by car to Korogwe town for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast we transfer to Muheza for our last cycle stretch to Pangani. It’s a gentle downhill section of 200m through small and large scale coconut and sisal plantations. In Pangani we cross with a ferry across Pangani River Delta and cycle another 20km along the coastline to Ushongo Beach for dinner and overnight at the Mikes cottages.

After breakfast we are picked up by boats to take us across the Indian ocean to the northern tip of Zanzibar. We pack our bags in plastic bags to protect them from the splashing waters. The transfer takes about 4 hours and we enjoy the sun, the water wind and warm temperatures. Upon arrival we cycle a short distance to the Kendwa Rock Hotel where we spend the next day relaxing on the beach.

After breakfast we get on our bikes and head south. On our 60 km ride, we pass
spice plantations and finally reach Zanzibar Stone Town. The best way to explore the city is on foot. We are greeted by narrow streets, historic buildings in Arabic Style that enchant with richly decorated heavy wooden portals. Also the Zanzibar Museum, the former slave market, the lively fruit and vegetable market, the old fortress, the sultan's palace, the Dr Livingstone House and the Sailing Marina are well worth a visit. Dinner and Overnight will be in Stone town at the historic Tembo House Hotel.

spice plantations and finally reach Zanzibar Stone Town. The best way to explore the city is on foot.
