Overview

Experience what the Eastern part of Uganda has to offer on this hiking trail. From the search of the rare Shoebill in Mabamba Swamp, a hike along the Mabira Forest to the source of River Nile, a thrilling experience doing water rafting on Sipi Falls and a cultural experience in Karamoja Museum.  This trip is filled with adventure, cultural and wildlife experiences. End the trip by doing Rhino tracking in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to end the trip on a high.

Day 1 Arrival

On arrival in Entebbe, our driver will be waiting to transfer us to the hotel for overnight stay and a pre-safari briefing. Overnight at 2 Friends Hotel.

Day 2 Mabamba Swamps Excursion – Kampala

Mabamba swamp is one of the best places to sight the famous and rare Shoebill in Uganda. Mabamba swamp is an arm of Lake Victoria connecting the main fishing village.

Early transfer by 07:30 to Nakiwoga for boat transfer to Mabamba Swamp in search of Shoe bill. The tour is by boat across the lake to Mabamba Swamps where we proceed by jumping into smaller canoes with guides to the get a view of the Shoebill, and many other birds. The boat tour across Lake Victory is magnificent with a great view of Entebbe. On approaching the swamps, we will pass through a fantastic lagoon with so many birds. Sometimes the Shoebill is found here rather than in the actual swamps.

After the excursion we enjoy lunch at Mabamba Resort, afternoon nature walks in Uganda Wildlife Education Centre Entebbe (UWEC)  and then drive through Kampala, Namanve on the way to Jinja for overnight at Kampala Nile Resort.

Day 3 Mabira Forest Walk – Jinja Source of Nile

After an early breakfast we drive to Mabira Forest on Jinja road for a 1 to 2 hours’ forest walk this morning. The Mabira Forest is one of the largest rainforests in Uganda. It has been protected as Mabira Forest Reserve since 1932 and it is home for many endangered species like the primates and rare birds. Its one of the top birding places in Uganda and there are a number of village tracks where we can walk. Optional lunch the we visit the source of Nile river, a small spot along the shoreline in Jinja, Uganda that marks the place where Speke “discovered” the Nile’s headwaters at Lake Victoria. Photo moments and we continue to our overnight hotel.  Dinner and overnight at 2 Friends Jinja HB.

Day 4 White Water Rafting then to Sipi Falls

Today we are up for a thrilling experience. We have an early breakfast then set off by 8am to go for the half day white water rafting experience on the River Nile waterfalls.

We have lunch and then drive to Mbale, arriving at the lodge early evening. Dinner and overnight at Sipi River Lodge cottages.

Day 5 Sipi Falls Hike, drive to Pian Upe Wildlife reserve

After breakfast we take a 2-3hrs Sipi Water Falls Hike.

On this hike, we follow a river, making it easy to stay on track. It'll take us through farmlands, and local communities. The second-highest of the waterfalls comes first. It plunges 85 metres before concluding in a spectacular splash.

Return to the hotel and check out with packed lunch and transfer to Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve. Pian-Upe Game reserve is located in the Far East of Uganda. This game reserve is the second largest in Uganda with stunning landscape and surrounding mountains. Pian Upe is Uganda's little known wildlife destination with rare species like the White Eared Antelope, Giraffes, Lions, Leopards, Zebras, Buffaloes and some rare birds like the Ostrich, the Jackson’s Hornbill, the white-headed buffalo-weaver plus more.

We will have a guided game drive in the afternoon then later retire for dinner and overnight at the Karamajong Overland Safaris Camp.

Day 6 Safari Walk, drive to Moroto

Today we have a morning walking safari in Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, visit the caves, hyena hills and spot wildlife like the giraffes and kobs along the routes. Behind the name Pian Upe are two most popular pastoralist tribes in the game reserve. The Pian is a sub group of the Karamojong while the Upe are the Kalenjin speaking people widely known as the Pokot in Kenya.

We return for lunch and head to Moroto, late afternoon arrival in Moroto for overnight at Mount Moroto Hotel.

Day 7 Mount Moroto Hike, Karamojong Cultural Experience

After breakfast we embark on a morning half day hike of Mt. Moroto, The hike is a total of about 30Km with starting point in Moroto town at 1400m above sea-level. The hike is about 3 and half hours. It sometimes involves walking on ridges and the views are amazing. Lunch then afternoon visit the Karamojong village for a cultural exposure and also visit the Karamajong Museum for a cultural experience. Dinner and overnight at Mount Moroto Hotel.

Day 8 Drive to Kumi, Nyero Rock Paintings Excursion

After an early breakfast we check out with packed lunch and transfer via Soroti to Kumi, Ngora district for an excursion to the famous Nyero Rocks. Here we find the Nyero Rock Paintings, that are believed to be the oldest rock art in Uganda. It consists of six panels of prehistoric art, including many geometric and abstract patterns painted in red and black pigment on six granite rock shelters. The rocks are estimated to be anywhere between 3,000 and 12,000 years old. Some hikes around the place are rewarding with photo moments. Return to Soroti for overnight at Timisha Hotel Soroti.

Day 9 Drive to Lira

After a relaxed Breakfast we check out and drive to Lira. We will have lunch on the way before arriving at the hotel for an afternoon check in. We can have afternoon optional activities around Lira, like a guided walk to the market center, interacting with local community.

Day 10 Ziwa Rhino Tracking

Breakfast in time then drive to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. The Ranch is the proud home of the only white rhinos in Uganda. Located in Nakasongola district, not only will we find rhinos, but a wide variety of bird species and other wildlife. The wildlife ranch has become a popular destination for tourists looking for adventure.

On the rhino treks, we will enter the territory of the southern white rhinos on foot with well-trained rangers who will guide us through the bush to wherever the rhinos are at the time. This adventure will give us the opportunity to watch these endangered, magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. All the rhinos at Ziwa are free to move around the 27 square miles within the ranch. Lunch, Dinner and Overnight at Amuka Lodge.

Day 11 Drive to Entebbe, airport transfer

After breakfast we check out and drive to Entebbe with minimum stops and optional lunch. We are transferred to Entebbe airport for our evening departure flight.
