Overview

This tour offers unique opportunities to explore Kenya and Uganda on foot and by car.  You not only come across the wildlife of East Africa but also appreciate the spectacular sceneries of the Rift valley, its lakes and the mountains.  Mt. Elgon with its caves and waterfalls is a water tower which feeds the Nile.  A boat ride on the Nile to the base of the Murchison Falls is included as well as an encounter with rhinos on foot.

Day 1 Arrival, transfer to Hotel

Upon arrival at JKIA, we are met by a Kibo Slopes Safaris driver / guide for a transfer to Crown Hotel located near Nairobi airport for an overnight rest.

Day 2 Drive to Naivasha, Longonot Hike

We enjoy breakfast and later head off with a short stop at the Great Rift Valley view point, enjoy the views before proceeding to Mt Longonot National Park gate to begin our climbing trek on the main trail on the northern side. The hike from the gate to crater rim is 3.1km distance while the crater rim trail distance is 7.2km. The total Mt Longonot hiking trail distance (from the gate-around the crater rim- back to gate) is 13.5km and takes between 4-6 hours to complete while taking rest. Later we drive to Elsamere Lodge for dinner and overnight

Day 3 Boat ride to Crescent Island

Today we take a boat ride on Lake Naivasha which takes us to Crescent Island for a guided game walk.  We return to the hotel check out and drive to Maili Saba for lunch on the rim of the Menengai Crater. After lunch we undertake a 3 hour guided Nature walk through the large caldera.

Day 4 Lake Bogoria Hike

Today we leave just at sunrise with a packed lunch and drive (1 hour) to the Hanington View Point at the top of the Rift Valley escarpment. The views over the Lake Bogoria below are stunning. Here we leave our car and meet our guide who takes us safely down the steep 600m escarpment. The hike takes about 4 to 5 hours. At the base, our car is already waiting to take us to the hot springs and a game drives along the lake shore. Thousands of flamingos are in the shallow water and on the shores we find giraffes, elands, zebras, and impalas amongst others. In the afternoon we arrive at Tumbili Cliff camp, a unique establishment overlooking Lake Baringo.

Day 5 Lake Baringo, drive through Kerio Valley

Early in the morning we have an opportunity to go on a boat ride on Lake Baringo with chances of spotting some hippos, crocodiles, and wonderful birdlife such as kingfishers and herons. At the geysers of the hot springs we can buy boiled eggs.  We return to the Camp for lunch and drive through the scenic Kerio Valley to Iten through uncountable turns from the hot Rift Valley floor to the chilly top of Tugen Hills, back into Kerio Valley. After another climb with many turns we climb up the escarpment and arrive at the Kerio View Lodge in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight.

Day 6 Drive to Kitale

Today at sunrise we can opt to join the long distance runners which are training here for a morning run or simply take a walk after breakfast and admire the spectacular views over the Kerio valley as the sun lights up the valley as it rises. After lunch we drive further West to Kitale through large scale farm which grow wheat and maize. Our destination is Siwo Resort where we take a guided nature walk or simply relax at the Resort.

Day 7 Mt Elgon Excursion

Today we explore Mt. Elgon National park. A 1 hour drives take us to the park gate. Right at the gate we are already meeting buffaloes. We pick up an armed ranger who escorts on the game drives. During the dry period we may even reach the road head at 3500m.  The caves are the most interesting sightings and we will explore them. In the particular the Kitum cave, which is frequently visited by tuskers who come here for minerals.  There are also water bucks, zebras and various species of gazelles and antelopes. With some luck we even may find a leopard in the tree’s.  In the afternoon we return to Sirwo Resort for dinner and overnight.

Day 8 Cross over, Drive to Sipi Falls

After breakfast we drive via Suam to Sipi driving through Mbale town and stop over for a break then continue to check in at Sipi lodge. Sipi is known for its falls on the foot hill of Mount Elgon, a beautiful place full of birds, waterfalls and creeks. Dinner and overnight stay at Sipi River Lodge.

Day 9 Waterfall Hike, coffee tour

After breakfast we conduct a 3 hour walk to the waterfalls, lush farms, forests and magnificent views of the Karamoja plains. We return to the lodge in time for lunch and later take a coffee tour tracing the story of Arabica coffee. We meet local farmers and tour their plantations and learn about the lifecycle of the crop. Dinner and overnight at Sipi River Lodge.

Day 10 Drive to Murchison Falls National Park

Today we drive to Murchison Falls Park with a stop visit at Nyero Rock paintings on the way situated in Kumi. The paintings date centuries of years back probably written in the Stone Age era. They are claimed to have been structured by the very early people who settled in the area, the art is attributed to Batwa gatherer who are of pygmy origin. We continue to Lira for lunch then continue to Pakuba Safari Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 11 Murchison game drives

After breakfast we embark on an extensive game drive in one of the oldest wildlife conservancy in East Africa with a wide range of animals in the Nile Valley. We marvel at herds of buffalos, dozens of elephants, warthogs and towering giraffes, along with bushbucks, reedbuck, duikers, kobs, oribi and many more. In the afternoon take a boat cruise towards the falls where the Nile waters drop 43m through a 7m wide gorge. At the bottom, huge Nile Crocodiles, Hippos in the water, Elephants and Buffalos bask on the shore. We hike to the top of the falls and later return to the Lodge for dinner.

Day 12 Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Today we leave Murchison to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. We arrive at the Amuka Lodge in time for lunch. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was  established in 2005 to re-introduce southern white rhinos back to their natural habitat in the environs of Murchison Falls. Today, the project has proved to be so successful that the introduction of 6 Southern white Rhinos have grown to 33 and still counting. In the afternoon we embark on our Rhino tracking on foot.  The trek can take an hour or less depending on where the Rhinos are located within the sanctuary. Dinner and overnight will be at the Amuka Lodge.

Day 13 Return to Kampala

Our Uganda adventure comes to an end with a drive to Kampala, the capital city build on seven Hills.   We undertake a short city tour and have lunch at the rotating restaurant of the seven hills. The views over the city are amazing. In the late afternoon we drive to Cassia Lodge for dinner and overnight overlooking the Lake Victoria.

Day 14 Departure

After breakfast, we are transferred to the airport for our departure.
