Loiyangalani means “a place of many trees” in the native Samburu tongue and is home to the El Molo, an almost extinct community in the Northern Kenya region also considered as the Cradle of Mankind. The 13th edition of Lake Turkana Cultural Festival is scheduled to take place in June / July 2023 in Loiyangalani and is one of the most memorable events in Kenya’s tourist calendar. Besides celebrating and helping preserve the cultures of the El Molo, Samburu, Gabbra, Rendile, Watta, Dasannach, Pokot and the Turkana, the festival also focuses on the economic development of the region and participating communities. Amazing display and presentation of cultural dances and traditions are just but a few awesome experiences and reasons you shouldn’t miss this year’s edition.

The next 2 days will be spent with the local communities exhibiting their culture and we will get a chance to interact with them as well as learn about their culture. The Lake Turkana Cultural Festival is quite unlike other African celebrations as rather than focusing on just one unique set of tribal traditions, it brings together around 14 communities to celebrate their similarities and differences as one. Locals and visitors alike celebrate their way of life. These communities are mainly nomadic so the festival is a chance for them to come together to share and showcase their traditional foods, their way of living and their customs. We may also have the option of a visit to rock paintings, a boat ride or a Sundowner on the lake shores.
