Materuni is the home of the Chagga tribe and is still an authentic tribal village. This charming place is just 15km away from Moshi Town and is the last village before the Kilimanjaro National Park. Besides encountering local customs and the life style of the Chagga tribe we also enjoy hiking in a lush tropical environment with breath taking views.
We are picked up after breakfast from our Hotel in Moshi or Arusha. A 1 to 1.5-hour drive takes us to Materuni Village at 1900m on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. First we visit the waterfalls, which are around a 40-minutes’walk away. On the way, our guide explains to us about the culture of the Chagga, village life and the surrounding fauna and flora. With some luck we may see the summit of Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching the stunning 80m high falls we can take a swim at pool on the bottom. We return to the village for a traditional lunch. In the afternoon we learn how coffee is cultivated, dried, roasted and further processed. The coffee grinding ceremony is accompanied by traditional Chagga songs and dances. Finally, we taste a cup of coffee, bid our host good bye and return to our hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
