Overview

This circuit offers a variety of flora and fauna and keep changing as you ascend through the different vegetation zones. The plant life varies from heavy tropical rain forests, bamboo forests, montane cloud forests, to alpine vegetation and glacial valleys. The view over the snow covered peaks are stunning.

Day 1 Kampala to Kasese

We leave Kampala by 7am, and drive to Kasese via Fort Portal with optional lunch on the way. Fort Portal is a picturesque town with numerous restaurants and the Tooro Kings palace on Karuzika hill overlooking the town. On winding roads we continue our journey to Kasese for dinner and overnight at the historic Margeritha Hotel build in the sixties just before independence.

Day 2 Drive to Kyanjuki Hostel 1450m, Hike to Rangers Post , Sine Hut (2596m)

We start by walking up the valley floor through tall forest trees of the Afro Montane Forest Zone. This is a steady climb with multitudes of birds and a chance of seeing blue monkeys scampering off through the forest. There is wide variety of plant species from forest trees to bamboos thickets, low shrubs, flowers, fungi, and with many moss and lichen covered vines hanging from the tall trees creating an awesome appeal. Enock’s Falls are just 200 meters from Sine Hut and offer a splendid opportunity to capture a great screensaver for your memories. The 9 km hike where an altitude of over 1000m is covered takes about 4 to 5hours

Day 3 Hike to Mutinda Camp 3588metres

After a good breakfast, trekking starts at 8.30am as we enter the Bamboo-Mimulopsis Zone which is steep climb with many high steps. In the wet season the bamboo zone is rather muddy and slippery.  After an ascend of  551 meters altitude and a distance of 1.8km we reach Kalama Camp at 3,147 meters which is in the Heather-Rapanea Zone. Here we  take a rest and a quick cup of tea or coffee before heading on to Mutinda Camp at 3680m.   The camp which is set near a small river and waterfall offers a chance to wash, refresh and relax. In the afternoon we ascend the Mutinda Look out ( 3925m) and are rewarded by amazing views across the Rwenzori Mountains and down to Kasese town and Lake George.

Day 4 Cross to Kiharo Camp 3460m

We start the day by climbing up a Rocky River bed then across a long stretch of bogs before climbing up to the top of a high waterfall. Boardwalks ease the hike  at the upper area, before descending down through Hunwicks Pass which is a new trail offering a the chance of spotting a Hyrax or Red Diker an Hawks and Eagles nesting high on the cliff faces. The trail takes us through a bog with Lobelias and tall heather trees before reaching Kiharo Camp at 3460m. About 200 meters from the camp is a high waterfall cascading down moss covered rocks which is worth a visit.

Day 5 Descend down to Rangers Post

The trail down the Nyamwamba Valley is mostly downhill and absolutely stunning with beautiful views. The moss covered rocks along the river, cascading waterfalls, deep valleys and forests are possibly the best in the Rwenzori Mountains. The forest along this section is magnificent and full of life with many birds, primates, duikers and hyrax. A great experience and ending to a fantastic trek. We will find our driver waiting for us at the base to transfer us to Ihamba Safari Lodge.

Day 6 Queen Elizabeth Excursions

After breakfast, we get into Queen Elizabeth National Park for an extensive game drive in the morning where we might come across lions hunting the favorite dish – the Ugandan kob, the Elephants, Buffaloes and much more. We will drive to Mweya Safari Camp for lunch before going on a Boat Cruise on the Kazinga Channel in the afternoon. The channel connects lake Edward and Lake George and is believed to host the highest number of Hippos in the world.

Dinner and overnight will be in Ihamba Safari Lodge.

Day 7 Transfer to Kampala with optional lunch on the way

After checking out of lodge we start our drive back to Kampala with optional lunch on the way and optional stops at interesting places en-route marking the end of our adventurous trip.
