Overview

This wildlife photography safari is mostly dedicated to capture the elusive Kenya Black Leopard in Laikipia. Until recently, the chances of spotting a black leopard in the wild in Africa have been close to impossible. But in 2018, a small population of black leopards were discovered on a series of camera trap images in the Laikipia. This photo safari is designed to take you to the heart of a black leopard territory to photograph a remarkable, beautiful colour form few have had the privilege to see, let alone photograph.

Apart from photographing the black leopard, you’ll get a chance to build your image bank by capturing the iconic wildlife present in Kenyan Parks. Samburu, one of the lesser-known of Kenya’s reserves, offers unique animal life and topography for stunning photo opportunities making it one of the best-kept secrets on the wildlife photography bucket list!  The Amboseli offers the best picturesque spots with its mighty Elephant herds captured against the backdrop of the towering Kilimanjaro.

Day 6 Game drives in Laikipia

The wildlife in Laikipia is extraordinary. The area is still wild and largely unfenced, which enables game to move around the landscape, following the rains. The area is home to a huge variety, from Lions to Dik-dik. It has become a stronghold for the more unusual species including more than 70 percent of the world’s remaining Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, zorilla, striped hyena, aardwolf, wild dog, and melanistic leopard. Large permanent herds of elephant, lion, leopard, spotted hyena, common zebra, warthog, hippo, buffalo, and many different antelope species. Our guide will help identify and enjoy the plentiful (recorded 350) species of birds’ reference bird list. We can either decide to do morning and afternoon game drives with lunch at the Camp. All meals and overnight will again be at Laikipia Wilderness Camp.

Day 7 Finding the “Black” Leopard

Our time here in Laikipia will be flexible when it comes to game drives. As early morning, dusk and the first few hours of dark are considered the optimum time to search for leopard, we will embark on morning and afternoon drive and stay out with the aim of being back in camp around 20h00.Originally captured on camera by Will Burrard Lucas in 2019, Laikipia has become famous for sightings of black leopards. These melanistic cats are extremely rare but have been sighted at the Camp. One female cub was born and raised less than 100m from camp. She is seen fairly regularly and is especially relaxed around vehicles which provides us with the most impressive sightings. Our tracker will be useful in pointing out areas where the leopard is occasionally seen. Photographing the elusive leopard in limited light may be a technical challenge, but we have the opportunity to capture her in a variety of situations and experiment with different lighting techniques with the spotlight.
