Overview

This tour is a gentle introduction to Kenya’s versatile landscapes. We explore Nairobi National Park, ascend Oldonyo Sapuk and Kima Kimwe, pass through the rolling Chyulu hills to the slopes of Kilimanjaro, do game drives in Amboseli, challenge the seven peaks of the Ngong Hills and end the tour with a walk through Karura forest in Nairobi.

Day 1 Arrival Nairobi

Meet and greet at Jomo Kenyatta International airport and transfer to Tamarind Tree Hotel for Kenya’s warmest welcome with quick access to Wilson Airport and the heartbeat of Kenya, Nairobi City. Our proximity to Nairobi National Park and Nairobi's major airports makes it the ideal business and leisure hotel.

Day 2 Nairobi National Park

We have an early morning and take a short drive to Nairobi National Park with a breakfast box. Wide open grass plains and backdrop of the city sky scrapers, scattered acacia bush play host to a wide variety of wildlife including the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife with over 400 species recorded.  The park hosts numerous picnic places and a hiking trail at the Hippo Pool. At one of the picnic sites we stop for breakfast.  For lunch we return to our hotel and in the afternoon we visit the Giraffe Center where we can feed giraffes upclose, the Sheldric Elephant orphanage for a lifetime up-close experience with elephants who are rescued and rehabilitated and the Karen Blixen Museum, the former African home of Danish author Karen Blixen, famous for her 1937 book Out of Africa which chronicles life at the estate.  For an optional dinner we have a choice of several world class restaurants.

Day 3 Drive to Oldonyo Sapuk

Today we leave the city early and drive 70 km eastwards to a small National Park around the forested mountain. We stop for photos on the way at the scenic fourteen falls on the Athi River.  At Oldonyo Sabuk we ascend the 2135m summit in about 3 hours and are rewarded by stunning views over the distant Nairobi to the south, Masinga Dam and Mt. Kenya to the north, and Mt. Kilimanjaro to the west   We are accompanied by an armed ranger because of the danger of buffalos roaming around. Sapuk means in the Maasai Language Buffalo. After a lunchbreak, we are picked up by car and drive the Oldonyo Sapuk Resort for dinner and overnight.

Day 4 Kima Kimwe – Hunters Lodge

A 2-hour drive through farmland and coffee plantations takes us to Machakos, the base of the Kima Kimwe (1885m).  Our guide takes us up to the shrine through small paths, farmland and settlements.  We marvel at the big Kiuumo tree, which served as Masaku’s shrine, who was a chief and spiritual leader with immense powers. The shrine and the tree date back to more than 200 years and have still significance to the community.  Our driver picks us here with a lunch stop along the way to Hunters Lodge along the Mombasa Road. The Lodge, built in 1958 on 25 acres of Kiboko Springs land, is paradise for bird lovers. Dinner and Overnight will be at the lodge.

Day 5 Chyulu - Hills

After breakfast, we drive to the Chyulu Hills park gate and embark on a journey up the scenic hills which rise up to 2188m. The Chyulu Hills Mountain Range spans over 60km from one end to the other.  Numerous lava tube caves crisscross the depth of the Chyulu Hills and are locally known as the Kisulu caves.  We explore only a 2 km long section of the caves which span up to 19.5km and are among the longest in the world. After lunch we use the numerous animal trails crisscrossing the open undulating landscape to hike to the ridge of the mountain range (1900m) where our car picks us up and takes us through the plains to Oldedera Farm on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Dinner and Overnight will be at a fly camp at the farm.

Day 6 Oldedera Farm Excursion

Oldedera is a multi- crop farm which got established in the late fifties. Being initially a cattle breeding place over time it has changed to various crops ranging from maize, beans to coffee and fruits. Of late the farm has started an Avocado plantation. Besides Cattle there are also some camels on the farm.  In the morning we undertake a guided farm tour and after lunch climb the Oldedera Hills which offers spectacular views over the plains below Kilimanjaro.   In the late afternoon we drive some 20 km to Loitokitok for dinner and overnight at the Garden Resort.

Day 7 Nalemoru River walk on the slopes of Kilimanjaro

After breakfast we are driven to the start of the Nalemoru River walk.  The 8km walk takes us through a scenic riverbed in a deep gorge close to the Tanzanian border. Along the way, we find acacia trees, gum trees, wild olive trees, mahogany and other tropical trees. At a scenic waterfall (though dry during the dry season) we stop for an already prepared barbeque lunch and have to watch out for baboons which might be interested in our delicious food.  The terrain is a bit rough and walking poles will assist.  Afterwards we hike via the Outward Bound School, a Kilimanjaro Climbing base dating back to the colonial time, to Loitokitok and have a stroll through the town and the colourful market (especially on market days). In the late afternoon we drive to Amboseli National park (40km) for dinner and overnight at Amboseli Sentrim Camp

Day 8 Amboseli National Park

On this day we enjoy full day game drives in the Amboseli National park.  Amboseli has a hot, dry climate with average rainfall of 350-400 mm per year. In the park there are however large wetland areas which are fed not only by the rain but also by the melting ice and snow from the 5895m high towering Kilimanjaro above.  The park is famous for large herds of elephants, however there are also numerous grass-eating animals such as wild buffaloes, gnus, zebras, impalas, giraffes, gazelles and gerenuks. Carnivores are there as well; lions, cheetahs, jackals and spotted hyenas. For lunch we return to the Camp and embark on an another game drive as the sun sets over the Roof Top of Africa.

Day 9 Oldonyo Orok - Lerruat

Today after an early breakfast we leave the park through the Namanga gate and after a 2 hours’ drive we arrive at Namanga town in the backdrop of a black hill. Oldonyo Orok, also known as Namanga Hill soars to an elevation of 2543m. The hill is a gazetted natural forest reserve and its largely unexploited vegetation makes it one of the few intact forests in Kenya. At some clearings we can view the town below and the distant Mt. Longido and Kilimanjaro, a sight to behold.  Our Maasai guide explains the medicinal values of the different plants. We pass by some caves which are used by the Maasai Warriors for their traditional ceremonies. It takes us about 4 hours to reach the summit and another 3 to descend.  Tired but full of fond memories we drive for 1.5 hours to another marvel of our safari the Lerruat Block cabins at an altitude of 2100m.

Day 10 Ascend Lerruat Hill, drive to Ngong Hills

Today before breakfast we take a short hike to the summit of the Lerruat hill to watch the sunrise and return for breakfast before we drive through a scenic route to the Ngong hills, the local hiking attraction for the Nairobi City residents.  We stop for lunch at Corner Baridi and hike from there through a hilly sparsely populated ranch land, dotted with a few subsistence farming fields. The 2-hour hike ends at in Olepolos a cottage, with magnificent views immersed in the African bush and connect with the true essence of Maasai Land.

Day 11 The seven hill challenge

During the British colonial rule, the area around the Ngong Hills was a major settler farming region, and many traditional colonial houses are still seen in the area. There are 7 peaks ridge along the Great Rift Valley, located southwest near Nairobi. From the eastern slopes one overlooks the Nairobi National Park and from the North the Nairobi City. The western slopes offer a magnificent view over the Rift Valley dropping down over 1000m below.  The first 3 hours take us through grassland to the summit (2460M) which is covered by a dense forest with indigenous trees and plants. Here we unpack our lunch and take a rest while chatting with some local herdsman. Another 2hour hike over 3 further hills takes us down to grassland and further to the first windmill farm in Kenya. Here our driver is waiting for us to take us to the leafy suburb of Karen for an overnight at the Severine Cottages.

Day 12 Tea & Coffee Plantation Visit

Today we look at the tea and coffee production in Kenya. These commodities besides tourism are the main pillars of Kenya’s foreign exchange earnings. Tea was first introduced to Kenya by the Caine brothers in the present day Limuru area and coffee was brought by the Holy Ghost Missionaries in 1893.   Around the city large coffee and tea plantations were started and were driving the phenomenal growth of the city. After breakfast we visit the Kiambethu tea farm in Limuru and learn more about tea farming before having a sumptuous lunch.  After lunch we drive to lower altitudes in Kiambu where the area is suitable for coffee growing.  After a Farm visit take a walk to a scenic cave and waterfall dating back to the Stone Age. In the late afternoon we drive to the Windsor Golf club, a Victorian style city hotel in a leafy and serene area just 20min away from the city center for dinner and overnight.

Day 13 Karura Nature Walk

Today is our final day which we dedicate to the memory of Dr Wangari Mathai, an environmental scientist and political activist as well as Nobel price holder. She and her Greenbelt movement was instrumental in protecting the forest from land grabbers when it came under threat in 1999. This remarkable natural resource is one of the largest gazetted forests in the world fully within city limits. It covers an area of about 1,000 ha (2,500 ac) and today is a shining example of conservation. We take a guided walk across the forest reserve starting from the main gate at the Kiambu road and ending at the River café. Our 10 km hike takes us past a waterfall, caves, marshlands with a large birdlife including migratory birds from Europe and Asia and secondary and primary indigenous trees. At the River Café we take our lunch and finally drive through the Village Market where we can buy some souvenirs back to the Windsor Golf Club for Dinner and overnight.

Day 14 Transfer to Airport for departure

Depending on our flight we can relax at the hotel, or opt to play golf or do some more shopping in the capital city.  Finally, we are transferred to the airport for our departure flight.
