Depending on our hiking experience and speed, the hike to the beautiful Crater Lake takes anything from 2 hours to 4 hours.
The hike leads through rain forest inhabited by the endangered mountain gorillas that were the subject of the movie "Gorillas in the Mist" about Dian Fossey. On arrival at the top, we will have full view of the Crater Lake and also the border with DR Congo. We take photos and eat our lunch before starting the descent down which is much faster. That is because the section from the camp to the summit is steeper and more difficult to navigate – especially if there is thick mud, strong winds and fog which reduces visibility. Reaching the summit, we will enjoy spectacular sceneries. We will have a view breath-taking views of volcano chains including Muhabura, Nyamuragira and Nyiragongo and also the great vegetation within the Virunga ranges and the Democratic Republic of Congo. After getting enough of the great views, we get ready for a 6 hours descent back to the starting point and then to the park office. Drive back to Lodge for dinner and overnight at Le Bamboo Lodge.

Between 2800 – 3200m is a beautiful forest patch of Hagenia Hypericum, over 3200 is that Sub-alpine zone that has fewer trees.
