Today, we cycle in an altitude between 1200 and 1500m along the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. We cross several ridges and rivers created by the ancient lava flows when Kibo was still an active volcano. The area is very fertile, and the Chagga population in the area does intensive small scale cultivations. We virtually cycle through banana forests intercropped with coffee and vegetables. At several homesteads we find people brewing “ Mbege “ the local banana beer used for celebrations and social functions. Due to several steep climbs and drops along the route the day is a little strenuous but we only need to cover about 35 km. In the early afternoon we arrive at the Aishi Hotel for a well- deserved rest, dinner and overnight in preparation for the ultimate Kilimanjaro Challenge.
