Overview

This tour allows you to experience the many sides of Tanzania. Starting with a cultural experience with the Hadzabi people, a trekking and wildlife experience in Ngorongoro, historical sites from the German colonial time and end the trip relaxing on a beach in Zanzibar island full of history.

Day 1 Arrival, transfer to Hotel

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, we are met by our driver guide for transfer to Kibo Palace Hotel for overnight stay.

Day 2 Drive to Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast, we drive to Lake Manyara National park for a game drive and have a picnic lunch en route. The park is famous for its tree climbing lions, elephants, flamingoes and giraffes. Later in the afternoon we drive to Lake Eyasi for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 Hadzabe Tribesmen

After an early breakfast, we search for a Hadzabe family, who will take us on a bow and arrow hunting expedition. The Hadzabe people are hunters and gatherers of not more than 500 people. Their click sounds language is related to that of the Bushmen in South Africa and their forefathers may have been the oldest inhabitants of the area. We witness their astonishing ability to track small game and hunt it down with their more than 2-meter-long bows. While they smoke their tubular stone pipes and make a fire to prepare a meal from their catch, we begin to appreciate the diversity of mankind. After lunch at the lake we visit a Datoga village. The Datoga are pastoralists and live close to the Hadzabe in the area. Later in the evening we drive to Endoro Lodge on the slopes of Ngorongoro for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4 Hike to Elephant Caves, Ngorongoro

Today we hike to the Elephant Caves. On this two-hour hike through the forested slopes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, we discover a magnificent waterfall and incredible “elephant caves” created by elephants digging up the earth to ingest the vitamin-rich soil. We may spot herds of buffalo, bushbuck, waterbuck and baboons, also attracted by the soil. After lunch we visit a Coffee farm for a tour. Dinner and overnight at Endoro lodge.

Day 5 Ngorongoro Crater Tour

Today we visit one of the Wonders of the World – the Ngorongoro Crater. After breakfast we descend 600m into the crater for our game drive. We take along packed lunch boxes. We come across virtually all game that one can expect to see in East Africa. Dinner and overnight at Rhino Lodge overlooking Lake Eyasi.

Day 6 Lake Empakai

After breakfast we drive to Empakai Crater with lunch boxes. We explore the Crater floor on foot with an armed ranger.  The lake is a primary breeding ground for flamingos, the forest is full of birds, buffalo and hyena inhabit the plains, and there is a good chance of spotting a leopard in the early morning. In the afternoon we drive back to Endoro Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 7 Mto wa Mbu cultural activities

After breakfast, we drive to Mto wa mbu town for Culture and walking activities, enjoy walking in local fields, learning different culture in this small town and enjoy the local food. We start our tour at the base of the Escarpment wall and climb to the top breath taking views of Lake Manyara, the village of Mto wa Mbu and Maasai Steppe beyond. Along the way we see an array of local bird species and magnificent 2000 years old baobab trees. A local lunch completes the adventure.  After lunch we drive to Weru Weru Lodge near Moshi on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Day 8 Materuni Village Experience

Today we explore the slopes of Kilimanjaro.  A 15km drive takes us to Materuni Village where we meet our village guide. A 1-hour walk takes us to the waterfall. On the way, our guide educates us about the culture of the Chagga, village life and explains the surrounding fauna and flora. The views are truly breathtaking, and with some luck we will see the summit of Kilimanjaro. After having enjoyed the scenery, we slowly return to Materuni village, where we experience a traditional Chagga lunch. After lunch we learn about coffee farming and processing and enjoy a home- made cup of coffee. Finally, we drive to Same for dinner and overnight in small village hotel.

Day 9 Mkomazi National Park

After an early breakfast and with packed lunch we proceed to a full day game drive in Mkomazi National park. Most of the animals that we spot are endangered species, particularly the black rhino and wild dog along with several species of birds. After an exciting game viewing we drive to Lushoto, the gem of the Usambara Mountain range. Dinner and overnight at Irente Cliff.

Day 10 Lushoto, Usambara Hike

Today we trek through the Usambara region. We hike along valleys and sloping hillside of the inner Usambara Mountain passing by the vegetable farms lined with eucalyptus and banana trees. The hike takes us to spectacular viewpoints, waterfalls and Magamba rainforest. Dinner and overnight at Irente Cliff.

Day 11 Amboni Cave, Tanga

After breakfast, we drive to Tanga for lunch before an early afternoon visit to the Amboni caves. The caves have been formed naturally in the Tanga Limestone series which is of Jurassic period (about 150 million years ago). Late evening we drive to Pangani, a small town located on the river of the same name. Pangani is rich in culture and history as it was one of the centers of the slave caravans during the slave trade years. Dinner and overnight at Mikes Cottages.

Day 12, 13 Kendwa Rocks

After breakfast we pack our bags and wrap them in plastic bag before we are taken with a small speed boat to Nungwi Village on the northern tip of Zanzibar Island. The 60 km boat trip takes about 2 to 3 hours.  Upon arrival we are transferred to the Kendwa Rock Hotel for 2 nights on Half board basis.  Here the tide never leaves the shore and the glowing sunsets are an everyday thrill.  We unwind on the white coral beach and in the clear turquoise waters.  The relaxed atmosphere at Kendwa Rocks will mellow us down in no time.

Day 14 Spice Tour

Today we undertake a spice tour on our way to Stone town. We get to discover the interesting and assorted range of spices and fruits that grow here. We are also given the opportunity to taste several delicious tropical fruits. Being able to learn and see the various herbs, spices and rare species of plants that grow in Zanzibar is quite intriguing as we never have heard or seen them before, let alone taste them. After arriving in Stone town we can opt for a lunch before we check in at Tembo House Hotel, a historical gem within the UNESCO Heritage Site of Stone Town. We are booked on Bed& Breakfast. This gives us an opportunity to try Swahili dishes in the numerous restaurants in the area.

Day 15 Stone Town Tour

After breakfast we depart for a guided tour of Stone Town. This tour commences with a visit to Zanzibar’s colorful market. Alive with the buzz of locals bartering fresh vegetables and baskets of tropical fruit, amongst them, the heady smell of Jack fruit (and many other exotic fruits) we continue on to the site of the cathedral built in 1874. The cathedral signifies a potent time in Zanzibar’s history and stands on the sight of a past slave market, its high altar standing on the exact site of the whipping post. Slavery was abolished in 1873 through a decree passed by the then current Sultan of Zanzibar. From here we visit the residence of the late Sultans of Zanzibar, ‘Tip Tip House’, the Old Fort, ‘Peoples Palace’ and the House of Wonders’, full of intrigue and vivid history from a bygone era. The tour ends with a stroll through the narrow streets of the old stone town, the heart of Zanzibar’s vivacious history with time for shopping.

Day 16 Transfer to Airport

Depending on our flight schedule we are transferred to the Zanzibar Airport for our departure flights.
