Overview

On this tour we will be learning more of the colonial history of Tanzania.  We visit the War Cemetery in Moshi and follow the historical places all the way to Zanzibar, to mention a few, the Kibo Hotel, which Hans Meyer used for his challenge of Kilimanjaro in 1889, the Usambara Mountain which were a preferred getaway for the German colonialists, Bagamoyo, the capital of German East Africa, and finally Zanzibar which is not only the Spice Island but was also a hub of the slave trade.

Day 1 Arrival

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, we are met by our driver guide and transferred to Sal Salinero Hotel in Moshi town for dinner and overnight.

Day 2 Chagga Village Materuni

After breakfast we visit the war cemetery and proceed to a Chagga Village on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.  With our local guide we undertake a short hike to the scenic Materuni Waterfall. Upon we return to the village we are treated to a Chagga traditional lunch.  After lunch we are taken for a coffee tour and learn how Coffee is grown, harvested, processed and roasted. After a cup of coffee, we proceed to Marangu for an overnight at Marangu Hotel which was initially as farmhouse at the beginning of the 19th century. By 1932 the owner started to take people to the mountain against payment and offered accommodation.  Here we will have dinner and spent an overnight.

Day 3 Marangu – Drive to Mkomazi Game Reserve

Today in the morning we visit the Kilimanjaro Park Main gate. The first successful recorded ascend was done in 1889 by Hans Meyer, a renown geographer and Hans Purtscheller an Austrian Mountaineer. The present Uhuru Peak was named Kaiser Wilhelm Spitze.  Today about 35000 people attempt to challenge the 5985m Uhuru peak. For lunch we visit the Kibo Hotel the oldest Hotel in the region, which already Hans Meyer used as his base. After lunch we drive down south to the Pare and Usambara mountains. In between lies Mkomazi game reserve which borders the Tsavo National Park in Kenya. During colonial time this area was one of the battle fields between German and British troops during the 1st World war. Today it is a game reserve with a wide variety of flora and fauna. We have our dinner and spent the night at Babu’s Camp.

Day 4 Mkomazi Game Reserve

Mkomazi Game reserve cover an area of 3,700 sq. km and is protected on its northern border by Tsavo National Park in Kenya. There is a wide variety of flora and fauna with 78 species of mammals including elephant, kudu, hartebeest, giraffe and aardwolf. Endangered African wild dog and black rhino have been introduced to Mkomazi with the aid of the Wildlife Preservation Trust. There are approximately 450-recorded species of birds in Mkomazi, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. All meals will today be served at Babu’s camp. Most of the animals that you will see are endangered species, particularly the black rhino and wild dog along with several species of birds. After an exciting day viewing wildlife you will drive back to the camp.

Day 5 Drive to Usambara Mountains

After breakfast we set off for Lushoto. The gem of the Usambara Mountain Range. Lushoto was once a summer getaway for the Germans during the German East Africa period as it is located a top the Usambara Mountain Range. It is now a burgeon town having fertile soils for farming and the best locations for trekking. We arrive Irente Cliff lodge in time for lunch and take a guided tour through Lushoto town where we learn more about the history of the area. The tour ends with a walk through the fertile farmlands of Jaegertal (“Hunter’s Valley”) to a fruit tree nursery.

Day 6 Magamba Forest Hike

We spend your day exploring the lush rainforest of Magamba and admire the rich vegetation, diverse wildlife such as colobus monkeys, chameleons and colorful butterflies. We also look at an old historic tunnel which was used as a bunker during the 1st World War. We will have a picnic lunch in the conducive air and eventually walk back to KWEMBAGO (the village of former Usambara Chief and Kilindi tribe, the rain makers) where we learn more about Sambaa Culture and will picked up to return to Irente Cliff Lodge for Dinner and Overnight.

Day 7 Bagamoyo

After breakfast we leave the Usambara mountains and drive down south to the historic coastal town of Bagamoyo; the original capital of German East Africa and one of the first and important trading ports along the coastline of Tanzania.  The town is abundant with historical monuments comprising of old Arab and Portuguese architecture further complimented by a wonderful stretch of beach.  We arrive at the Traveller’s Lodge for a late lunch and embark on guided town town tour in the afternoon. The tour takes us to the Kaole ruins of 13th century, the old Fort, the German Boma, the German port, the Old Church and the former slave village and entry gate.

Day 8 Sadani National Park

We have an early breakfast and drive up north along the coast line with packed lunch. Our destination is Saadani National Park, one of a kind paradise with unique ecosystem where beach life meets wilderness. This gives us not only the opportunity to plunge into the Indian Ocean straight after your safari, but also to be submerged in a unique display of both marine and mainland flora and fauna in a naturally fascinating setting. There is a spectacular concentration of wild animals like Waterbuck, Giraffe, Warthog, and Yellow baboon, Reedbuck, Bushbuck, Hartebeest, Elephant, Buffaloes and Lions while the beach is a breeding ground for green hard shelled sea turtles. In the afternoon we continue our tour along the coastline to Pangani for dinner and overnight at the Tides Lodge

Day 9 Tanga – Amboni Caves

Today we explore Tanga. A short drive after crossing the Pangani River with a ferry takes us to

the port city in northeast Tanzania. Covering large swaths of coastline, Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park shelters prehistoric coelacanth fish and manatee-like dugongs. Within the park, Tanga Bay is home to Toten Island, with its ruined mosques and German colonial buildings.

We undertake an excursion to Toten Island.  After lunch we visit the Amboni caves north west of Tanga. The limestone Amboni Caves are filled with stalagmites and stalactites and are a mystic place for the local population. The caves have been formed naturally in the Tanga Limestone series which is of Jurassic period (about 150 million years ago). For dinner and Overnight we return to the Tides Lodge.

Day 10 Ushongo - Zanzibar

After breakfast we are picked up for a boat transfer to across the Indian ocean to the northern tip of Zanzibar.  We pack our bags in plastic bags to protect them from the splashing waters. The transfer takes about 4 hours and we enjoy the sun, the water wind and warm temperatures. Upon arrival we transfer to Kendwa Rock Hotel close by where we spend the day relaxing on the beach.

Day 11 Zanzibar

Today we relax at the Indian Ocean or opt for water sports activities which can be booked directly at the hotel.  Here in the north, the tide never leaves the shore and the glowing sunsets are an everyday thrill. We unwind on the white coral beach and in the clear turquoise waters.  The relaxed atmosphere at Kendwa Rocks mellows us down in no time.

Day 12 Spice & Jozani Forest tour

After breakfast we check out. our driver picks us up for a tour to Jozani Forest with a professional guide. The 2-hour tour through the only remaining natural forest reveals a magnificent bio diversity. The forest, with trees older than 100 years, is the sanctuary for some very interesting animals, including the Red Collobus monkey, the small Zanzibar leopard, blue monkey, chameleon, mongoose, bush baby, tree hyrax, bush pig, civet, and two small antelope species found only on Zanzibar, Zanzibar duiker and sunni.  After the forest tour we have a lunch and proceed in the afternoon for a 3-hour spice tour. You will see how they are grown, feel and taste them while having an opportunity to interact with the local farmer. In the late afternoon we head for stone town for dinner and overnight in the Tembo House Hotel.

Day 13 Stone Town

The best way to explore the city is on foot. We are greeted by narrow streets, historic buildings in Arabic Style that enchant with richly decorated heavy wooden portals. Also the Zanzibar Museum, the former slave market, the lively fruit and vegetable market, the old fortress, the sultan's palace, the Dr Livingstone House and the Sailing Marina are well worth a visit. The tour ends with a lunch at stone town.  In the afternoon we can shop for souvenirs on our own. Dinner and Overnight will be in Stone town at the historic Tembo House Hotel.

Day 14 Return flight

Our Tanzanian tour comes to an end.  We have lots of impressions in our heads and hearts as we are transferred to the airport for our return flight
