Overview

The Kenyan Highlands offer excellent hiking trails allowing guests to take in breathtaking views of the towering gorges in Hell’s Gate National Park and a hike to the beautiful Lake Ellis on Mt Kenya – Africa’s second highest peak. Spot leopards lounging in the high branches, elephants at Ewaso Nyiro River and the striking Grevy’s zebra at Samburu National Reserve.

Tour Plan

Day 1 Hells Gate – Lake Naivasha

We will be picked up at 8.00am from our Hotel in Nairobi. After an introduction by our driver/guide and after a pre-briefing we drive to Naivasha with a stop at the Rift Valley view point. We arrive at about 11.00am at the Fish Eagle Camp, check in and have an early lunch. In the afternoon, we drive to Hell’s Gate National Park for a game drive. The scenery is spectacular and in the cliffs of the gorge we find numerous birds of prey while in grassy plains zebras, giraffes, buffaloes and different species of antelopes can be found. In the late afternoon, we return to the camp via the Olkaria Geothermal Power plant for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2 Mount Longonot

After breakfast, we drive with lunchboxes to Mt Longonot (2,776m) for a 5-hour hike round the Crater Rim. The views from the rim over the Rift Valley and its lakes are spectacular. Longonot park covers 52sqkm most of it being occupied by the young volcano. The sides of the mountain have beautiful V-shaped valleys and ridges. The stony soil has little vegetation and the crater has an impenetrable forest. In the late afternoon, we return to our Camp just in time for a sunset cruise on Lake Naivasha. There are hippos in the water and various plains game such as Zebras, Giraffes, Buffaloes and Gazelles on the shore. Numerous species of water birds can be seen while Fish Eagles circulate above the waters looking for prey. Dinner and overnight stay will once again be at the camp.

Day 3 Aberdares – Karura Falls

After breakfast, we transfer with packed lunch to the Aberdare National Park. We take a guided walk with an armed ranger to Karura Falls; the highest waterfalls in the region. The Aberdares are a range of volcanic mountains with up to 4000m. There is plenty of wildlife ranging from elephants, buffaloes, lions and rhinos and plain game. To protect the park from encroachment by human activities and protect the neighboring farmers from the wildlife, a 400km long fence has been erected. In the late afternoon, just before sunset we drive to the historic Ark hotel build during the colonial time for dinner and overnight. The waterhole attracts many of the wildlife species throughout the night. We may see Elephants and Buffaloes, but also predators such as lions and leopards frequent the place.

Day 4 La Satima

After breakfast, our trekking adventures in the Aberdares continues, this time ascending the Aberdares highest peak-the Oldonyo La Satima (4001m). On clear days, we can capture the magnificent view of the snowcapped Mount Kenya Peaks - the second highest mountain in Africa. After conquering the summit (3hours), we descend to the Road Head (2 hours) for a hot cup of tea and a snack. We leave the park and spent the night at the Aberdare Country Club.

Day 5 Mt. Kenya – Meru Bandas

Today we have a long drive before us.  The drive takes us through tea and coffee plantations on the slopes of Mt. Kenya in Kirinyaga district where Kenya and Mt. Kenya derive the name from.  In Embu we stop for lunch in the Issac Walton in which dates back to the colonial time. After another 60 km we reach Chogoria and climb in 4x4 ‘s for another 30 km through a bamboo forest to the Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas at 3000m for dinner and overnight. The bandas are located at the edge of the forest, and will be our base for our Mt. Kenya exploration.

Day 6 Lake Ellis

After breakfast we hike with packed lunch to Lake Ellis, on a path through grassland and forest patches. Lake Ellis is a popular attraction on Mt Kenya with crystal clear blue waters. On the way we find game such as buffaloes, Bongos, waterbucks and Klipspringers. We may also spot birds of different species.  At the scenic lake at 3450m, we break for lunch and take some photos before starting the descend to the Bandas for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7 Samburu National Park

After breakfast and a final glance of the Mt. Kenya peaks, we descend in our Land cruisers to Chogoria and drive to Samburu National Reserve.  During the evening game drives we encounter the Beisa Oryx, the Grevy Zebra and the reticulated giraffes which are prominent in the arid and hostile environment. Along the banks of the scenic Ewaso Nyiro River there are Elephants, Lions and Leopards and plenty of plains game. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Samburu Simba Lodge.

Driving:  190 km, 6 hours with game drive

Day 8 Samburu game drives

Our day starts with an early breakfast at 6.00am followed by game drives until midmorning. When temperatures rise above 35 degrees Celsius and the animals take a rest in the shade, we relax at the pool at the Samburu Simba Lodge. In the late afternoon, we venture out again to watch the bush come to life as the temperatures become bearable. After watching the sunset we return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 9 Return to Nairobi

After an optional early morning game drive, we leave the low lands and drive to the former fertile White Highlands characterized by large commercial wheat and barley farms. In Nanyuki, we stop at the Trout Tree restaurant for delicious tilapia lunch and finally return to Nairobi for evening departure or an overnight stay.
