This tour is an exploration of the Turkana community and their neighbors, the Karamonjong in Uganda. These arid lands in Kenya and Uganda have been for years marginalized but are starting to open up. Besides this we spend some time on the shores of the largest desert lake in the world – the Lake Turkana while the tour end Kampala at the shores of the 3rd largest fresh water lake – the Lake Victoria.
Upon arrival we are met by a representative of the hotel and transferred to Crown Plaza near the airport for dinner and overnight stay.

At breakfast we meet a representative of Kibo Slopes Safaris for briefing and a transfer to Wilson Airport for 1.5 flight to Lodwar, the capital of Turkana county. In Lodwar we will be met by a representative from Eliye springs and transfer through to the resort at the shores of lake Turkana. Eliye springs is a palm fringed sandy beach reminding of the Indian ocean beaches. The afternoon we spent in the cool water at the lake.

The 200 km long and 50 km wide Lake in often quite windy and the waves are quite treacherous. Today we intend to visit one of the three islands in the Lake, the central island which is also a National Park. The time for the 40 min boat trip depends on the wind and weather conditions. Central Island has 3 crater lakes. One is inhabited by crocodiles, while another is home to flamingos and the third one is full of tilapias. With packed lunch and a local guide we walk along the crater lakes and return to the Resort for dinner and overnight. In the late afternoon we visit a nearby Turkana village and learn more about their lifestyle. At an extra fee we are entertained to their traditional dances.

Today we have an early breakfast. Our Ugandan driver has arrived and briefs us about the program. We drive through Lodwar and Turkwel to the Border town of Lokiriama. The roads are quite treacherous particularly on the banks of the Turkwell river. In the afternoon we arrive in Moroto and clear with the Ugandan Immigration before checking in Mt. Moroto Hotel.
We pass through traditional Turkana villages, desert scrub, herds of camels, and flash flood plains before crossing the foothills of Mt. Moroto to enter Karamojong territory. In the evening we can drive to the slopes of Mt, Moroto for a sundowner with magnificent views over the plains below.

Today we visit the Karamojong museum and learn more their life style and history with an eloquent Museums guide. With packed lunch we drive further north to Kotido, a typical colorful multicultural town. On the way, we pass through Matheniko Wildlife reserve for game drives., The animal and wildlife population is respectable, though scattered in smaller groups and not as dense as in the larger game parks, however the scenery is extremely beautiful offering amazing photo opportunities of the vast mountains, rocks, valleys and shrubs besides wildlife predators such as serval cats, wild cats, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and, Leopards. Antelopes rule this reserve and include dik-dik, eland, mountain reedbuck, roan antelope, Uganda kob, Oribi, Bright’s gazelle, Topi, duikers and buffaloes. In the late evening we arrive at Karamoja art – a place owned by Anke Simiyu who has worked the community for many years and studied their culture. We spend the night in the simple roundels build in Karamojong style and enjoy a traditional dinner.

Today we visit Nakapelimoru Village, nearby Kotido town, known as the largest traditional village in East Africa and home to the Jié (fighters). The community has grown over the years and culture has been preserved like the controversial facial and body scarifications. After the visit we return to Kotido for lunch and drive on north to the Kidepo National Park. Our destination is the Savanah Lodge situated on a hill at the edge of the park overlooking the Kidepo plains. We have still time for a short late afternoon game drive to look for some of the 77 mammals and 475 bird species found here.

Today we have an early breakfast and should leave the Lodge by 7.00am for our morning game drives where we find herds of buffaloes. Kidepo has the highest concentration of buffaloes in East Africa – Elephants, Lions, Leopards and maybe even the elusive cheetah besides plenty of plains game such as giraffes, zebras, impalas, harte beests and varieties of birds. As the temperatures rise we return to the lodge for lunch and a siesta and embark on another game drive later in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight will be again at the lodge.

Today we embark on a last early morning game drive to make use of the morning light and return for breakfast to the Lodge. A 250 km drive through the hilly Country side takes us to Gulu, the Acholi business hub in Uganda’s Northern region. After a late lunch we spend the afternoon with a local guide to learn more about the Acholi history and culture. For dinner and overnight we return to the Churchill Hotel.

We have an early breakfast and drive drown south to Kampala the capital city. We will have a photo stop at the Karuma Falls, and stop for a traditional lunch served on banana leaves in the Luwera triangle. In the late afternoon we arrive at Kampala and spend the night at Cassia Hotel overlooking Lake Victoria.

Today we explore the city on the seven hills. Kampala has plenty of things to do such as touring the Uganda museum which is the oldest museum found in East Africa, the heritage Centers like the Kabaka’s palace, Kasubi tombs which are the burial grounds of Buganda kings, wonderfully made religious centers, the Rubaga and Namirembe cathedrals, and the Ghaddafi mosque which has a 90 angle view of the Kampala city. We will have our lunch at the Rotating Seven Hills restaurant overlooking the city. After lunch we visit the Namugongo Martyr shrine and return in the late afternoon return to our lodge.
