This tour gives you a chance to compare the drier northern side with the southern side which experiences more rainfall. The climb is rather easy with spectacular views of the Kibo Summit accompanying you right from the start. The descend takes place on the Marangu route where you can enjoy Seneca and Lobelia up to 3800m and a lush rainforest in the lower region around Mandara.
On arrival at Nairobi Airport our driver will be waiting to take us to Loitokitok for our dinner and overnight stay at Kibo Slopes Cottages. In the evening our mountain guide gives us a detailed briefing about the hiking adventure ahead of us. We have time to ask questions and re-assurance about the undertaking. We have an early breakfast at 8.00 am and drive 16km to the Tarakea border post. After clearing with the Immigration formalities we meet our mountain guide and drive for another 18 km to the Nalemoru gate at 2100m. The mountain crew is already waiting and after brief introductions we set off into the hiking adventure. En-route we may spot some Colobus monkeys and baboons among a variety bird life. The day’s 9 km walk should take about 3 - 4 hours to adjust to the gradually to the increasing altitude. Our Camp site is located at 2700m at the edge of the forest and is designated as Sekimba Camp.

We have our first breakfast outdoors with excellent views of the plains below and the Kibo massive towering above. At about 8.00 am we resume hiking through the moorland to Kikelewa caves (3600m). The 14km trail takes about 6 hours with a lunch break at the 2nd caves (3300m). The campsite is situated next to the Kikelewa River, where we can opt to take a dip in the cold waters, while enjoying an evening view of the towering Mawenzi peak. Overnight stay will be in a fly camp. Overnight in fly camp.

Today's target is the Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4330m). A couple of meters away is a scenic lake at the foot of the Mawenzi peak which is also the last water point on this route before the summit. From here we have a magnificent view of the Kibo peak and the Kibo saddle. Lunch will be taken on the way. In the afternoon, we can take an acclimatization hike around the lake and the rugged base of Mawenzi. The night will be spent in the tents.

Today is meant for acclimatization. After breakfast, we descend to about 4000m and hike along a moon-like barren landscape at 4000m before again ascending to the School hut at 4750m. The hike takes about 6 hours and we stop for lunch on the way. The afternoon will be spent resting and marveling at the scenery around us. We have an early dinner and sleep at sunset in the bunk beds. The hut is usually not crowded and gives much better chances to rest in preparation for the next day’s challenge.

After the short night’s rest and a hot drink, our final ascend starts at about 1.30am. The 4km-long path gradually gets steeper, taking us to the Gillman's point (5685m) at sunrise at 6.00am. We can watch the sun rise over the Mawenzi Peaks in the East as it illuminates the magnificent Northern Ice Fields. After a short break, we proceed along the crater rim to the Uhuru peak (5895m) reaching there between 8.00 and 9.00am. After a summit photo session, we descend to Kibo Hut for lunch. Another 3-hour hike takes us to Horombo (3720m) where we find our dinner ready and spend the night once again in a fly camp.

After breakfast, and a final glance at the Kibo summit which we have conquered, we now embark on the final leg. The 6 to 8-hour hike takes us from the moorland into a beautiful natural forest characterized by giant ancient trees. After lunch at Mandara, we will get to the Marangu Gate (1800m) at 1.00-3.00pm depending on our speed and strength. Here, we will be awarded certificates for a successful climb & bid the crew goodbye. We drive to Moshi for our dinner and overnight stay at Sal Salinero.

After breakfast, depending on the timing of our flight we transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for departure or proceed for a Safari.
