The Central Highlands with Mt. Kenya are an ideal setting for a mountain bike adventure. Besides conquering summits rising above 4000m, the slopes offer excellent downhill races. At the lower altitudes close encounters with wildlife are part of your adventure. At Ol Pejeta we get to do game drives. Ol Pejeta partners with international wildlife, security and research specialists to ensure they stay at the forefront of conservation innovation.
Upon arrival in Nairobi we will be met by our guide and transferred to Tamarind hotel for briefing and overnight. Our guide will answer all our preliminary question about the program which we may have.

After breakfast at 7.30 am we drive through the fertile farmland of the central province to Aberdare Country Club for lunch. We assemble our bicycles and undertake a test ride to the nearby Mau Mau caves 12Km. The Mau Mau Cave was used as a hide-out by Kenyan Freedom Fighters during the Mau Mau Uprising of 1952 to 1960 and is located in the thicket of the Aberdare & Mount Kenya Forest. From our guide we learn more about Kenya’s struggle for independence. In the late afternoon we return to the hotel for dinner and Overnight.

After an early breakfast we secure our bicycles on the cars and transfer to Kisima on the Samburu Road. The drive takes us past large scale wheat and barley farms on the slopes of Mt. Kenya. At 2500 m we start our challenge of the 5199m high mountain of the god – the majestic Mt. Kenya and throne of Mumbi and Gikuyu, the ancestors of the Kikuyu tribe. The trail leads us through farmland to an indigenous rainforest. At 3000m we take a lunch break at the school of adventure before we proceed to the Western Marania in the moorland at 3300m. The crew has already pitched tent and prepared a delicious dinner. Overnight will be in tents at the Marania camp site.

With the three peaks of Batian, Nelion and Lenana, named after the famous Maasai leaders towering above us, we ascend today the mountain to the 3700 m high Allan’s point. Partly we have to carry our bicycles because of the tussock grass which makes cycling difficult. In the early afternoon we arrive at the campsite and might decide to stroll a little higher to improve on acclimatization before we return to the camp for dinner and overnight at the Allan’s point camp site.

Today we rise early for breakfast and cycle on with lunch in our rucksacks. At 4200m, at the Major’s camp, we stop for lunch and a rest before we carry on through the moorland between Lobelia and Seneca to the Hinde Valley, the last point we can ascend by bicycles at 4000m. Dinner and overnight will be again in a fly camp set at the Hinde valley which has been set by the accompanying crew.

Today we leave the bicycles behind. They are carried by our porters to the Shipton’s camp while we climb to the Austrian Hut at 4750 m where we spend the night in the hut. As the sun sets we look at the 3 majestic peaks towering above us. We will challenge Point Lenana tomorrow before sunrise.

Just before the sun rises and after a cup of tea, we start our 45 minute ascend and stand at 6.00 am on the 3rd highest point of Mt. Kenya watching the sunrise over the plains and clouds below. On the saddle of our bicycles we descend to the Old Moses camp at 3300m where we spend our last night on Mt. Kenya.

Today is dedicated to the East African wildlife. Conservation is a dynamic and rapidly changing scene. Ol Pejeta partners with international wildlife, security and research specialists to ensure they stay at the forefront of conservation innovation. These partnerships have led to unique data findings and cutting-edge technology; that have contributed to the protection of Ol Pejeta’s diverse species. The conservancy is arguably the leader in conservation in Kenya. On our game drives in the vast ranch we encounter with some luck all of the Big five besides lots of plains game. This is also the only place in Kenya where we can find Chimpanzees. This species has been translocated from Uganda during the reign of Idi Amin to protect them from extinction. For lunch we return to our hotel and proceed in the afternoon for further game drives.
