Enjoy wonderful views of the city of Nairobi and the Great Rift Valley while hiking the Ngong Hills. Located 25 Kilometres South West of Nairobi, Ngong Hills Reserve offers a 4 to 5 hours hiking experience with magnificent views making the effort worthwhile. 5 Kilometres to the East is the Nairobi National Park, to the North East is Nairobi city views, and to the west the hills overlook Masai Manyattas 1,000 meters down in the Rift Valley.
We are picked from Nairobi CBD by our driver guide and head South West to the Ngong Forest Reserve. The hike up Ngong Hills starts right from Ngong town at the northern foot of the hills 1961m above sea level, and traverses the whole range to the southern end at “Kona Baridi” meaning cold corner.
The first thing that strikes you as you come up the hill is the enormous size of the windmills. The first 2 kilometres from Ngong Police Station are a gradual ascent through human settlements until we get to a Kenya Wildlife Barrier indicating the start of the Ngong Hills Forest Reserve. From here on, we go past a wind farm, before climbing the first steep hill leading to an area populated with radio repeater station masts. We continue through 5 more hills to the summit on the 6th hill called Lamwia ( 2460m ).
Finally, we descend on a long, slope downward to "Kona Baridi". Our driver meets us here and drives us to Kona Baridi Nature Camp for lunch and afternoon activities of either zip lining, wall climbing or high ropes. In the evening are dropped off back in the city by our driver marking the end of our short but fun trip.
