Overview

This tour offers unique opportunities to explore Rwanda with its natural treasures and rich culture. A visit to the Genocide Museum is both informative and pensile. Akagera National Park offers beautiful landscapes and wildlife like the Big Five and over 400 bird species. Ascending Bisoke is besides physically challenging an experience of a life time. There is also an option of Gorilla Tracking. Boat and canoe rides on Lake Kivu and Mukungwa river complete the adventure.

Day 1 Arrival Kigali

Upon arrival at Kigali International airport we are received by a Kiboslopes representative and drive to Scheba Hotel for check in and overnight stay.

Day 2 Kigali City Tour

After breakfast we embark on a tour of Kigali which is ranked as the cleanest city in Africa. During this tour we will visit historical places like the Richard Kandt museum which was the first modern house in Kigali, the Genocide memorial to have a better understanding the tragedy that happened in 1994. The tour through the old and new Kigali takes us to cultural and artistic places like the Inema Arts Centre and Nyamirambo, the most vibrant area in Kigali where we can opt for lunch, as well as the Kimironko Market. Overnight will be at the Scheba hotel

Day 3 Drive to Akagera National Park

Today we drive to Akagera National Park after breakfast. On the way we pass by Imigongo Art Center in Nyanza for a coffee stop before we arrive for lunch at the Akagera Rhino Lodge. In the afternoon we undertake a Nature walk and a sunset canoe ride.  This is a great way explore Rwanda’s everyday life and to learn about the history of the area, the native plants and animals and meet the community members engaged in bee keeping, making handicrafts and farming.

Day 4 Akagera Game drives

After an early breakfast with packed lunch we go for a game drive within Akagera National park. The Area is dominated by a labyrinth of swamps and lakes which form the most remote source of the Nile. This typical African savannah landscape is habitat to big game. Beside the big five Akagera NP offers beautiful landscapes and plenty other animals like zebras, bushbuck, antelopes and primates like olive baboons, velvets and secretive blue monkey which are seen during the day. Akagera NP is also home to over 500 birds’ species. After a long and interesting game drive, we head back to Akagera Rhino Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5 Drive to Nyanza, King’s Palace Visit

After breakfast we check out and head to the southern part of Rwanda. This is a five hours drive with stopovers on the way. The Southern Province of Rwanda is known as the heritage corridor with plenty of cultural and historical sites. Along the corridor we visit cultural sites like King Ruganzu footprints and Kabgayi Basilica. After an optional lunch in Muhanga, we continue to Nyanza and make a stop at the Kings Palace Museum, a replica of the ancient kings’ house and learn about Rwandan Kingdom life. We also pass by Save Catholic Church the first church built in Rwanda. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Maison Sifa in Huye.

Day 6 Coffee plantation visit, Ethnographic museum

After breakfast we drive to Huye Mountain Coffee Cooperative for a 2 hours’ tour then head to the Ethnographic museum in Huye and learn more about the Rwandan culture. We are entertained by the renowned Intore traditional dancers and have an optional lunch at Ibis Hotel. After lunch we drive to Nyungwe National Park for an overnight at Nyungwe Top Hill view Hotel. As the names suggests The hotel is built on the top of one of the hills positioning it to have the most beautiful views in the Nyungwe Forest area. Located five minutes' drive off a main road, uphill, the hotel has 12 cottages arranged into two rows, one at the sunrise and the other at the sunset side.

Day 7 Nyungwe canopy walk

After an early breakfast we drive to the Nyungwe NP office in Uwinka for briefing and start the 2-3 hours canopy walk in the beautiful natural rain forest and also experience a 160 m sky walk on 90 m high level from the ground. Right after the Canopy walk we drive to Karongi and have a late lunch at Cormoran lodge, relax at the beach for the rest of the day and spend the night at the lodge.

Day 8 Lake Kivu Boat ride

After breakfast we enjoy a 3 hours’ boat ride from Cormoran Lodge to Gisenyi. On the boat ride we will be able to see and visit some of the islands within Kivu Lake and activities done in that area like fishing. We also enjoy the view of the neighboring city of Republic Democratic of Congo. At Gisenyi our driver picks us up again and takes us for lunch at the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel before driving to Musanze with breath taking views over the Virunga Volcanoes. Dinner and overnight will be at the La Palme Hotel.

Day 9 Volcanoes National Park Caves, River Mukungwa canoe ride

After breakfast we drive to Volcanoes National Park office for briefing and start the caves adventure. The caves were formed as a result of volcanic eruption and were used as shelter during the war. The 3 hours’ cave exploration ends with a lunch in one of the restaurants. In the afternoon we drive to Mukungwa for a canoe ride on the river.  Be aware of getting wet in some of the rapids. The view over the Virunga Volcano are impressive as we paddle relaxingly through the waters which allow us to see some local village too engaged in their daily activities.

Day 10 Mt Bisoke Hike, Dian Fossey grave visit

After an early breakfast and packed lunch, we drive to Volcanoes National Park headquarters for briefing at 7 a.m to hike Mt Bisoke.  Mt. Bisoke is an extinct volcano in the Virunga mountain range in East Africa with its beautiful crater lake at the summit. The hike leads through rain forest inhabited by the endangered mountain gorillas that were the subject of the movie "Gorillas in the Mist" about Dian Fossey. At the summit we marvel at the scenic crater lake and unpack our lunch.  After descending we return to La Palme for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 11 Optional gorilla tracking/ return to Kigali

Today we relax at the hotel, enjoy an optional massage or have a tour of the village if we do not opt for Gorilla tracking. After lunch our driver takes us back to Kigali where we refresh at Scheba hotel before a sumptuous rooftop diner in the evening with magnificent views of Kigali at night from the rooftop of Ubumwe Grand Hotel.  Overnight stay is at Scheba Hotel.

(Optional Gorilla tracking) After an early breakfast at 7 am we report to the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters for briefing then go for gorilla tracking. The trek may take anything between 2 to 4 hours until we spot the gorillas feasting on bamboo sprouts. We have an hour to observe them in their habitat and take pictures. Gorilla tracking on this day must be pre-booked when booking the safari as it is subject to availability.

Day 12 Transfer to Airport

After breakfast we drive to Kigali International Airport which is 20 minutes from the hotel for our departure.
