After our breakfast we embark on a scenic drive to Musanze , arriving at our hotel just in time for lunch. After lunch  we’ll go for canoeing in Mukungwa River for a 2-hours’ boat ride surrounded with vegetation with nice views. Durig the canoe trip we gain a unique perspective of Rwanda’s countryside ; we will pass working farmers, green hills, and rural villages on the cruise. Look out for native species such as birds and otters, and benefit from insight provided by our professional guide. Drive back to Lodge for Dinner and Overnight.

After an early breakfast we leave with packed lunch to Volcanoes National Park headquarters, where we will be assigned a guide before a half-hour drive to the starting  point of  our hike for a full-day excursion. The hike leads through the rain forest inhabited by the endangered mountain gorillas. We vist Dian Fossey’s grave yard and learn the impact of her research.

We then proceed to the summit  which is dominated by a beautiful crater Lake ; the ultimate prize of the hike. On a clear day the views are far reaching. This is a great place to relax and enjoy our lunch, before starting our descent. We will find our driver waiting for us at the starting point to drive us back to  the lodge for dinner and ovenright stay.

After an early breakfast with packed lunch, we drive to Volcanoes National Park headquarters for briefing which starts at 7 a.m. then hike to Karisimbi (14,787 ft.) Mt. Karisimbi is an inactive volcano in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Karisimbi is the highest of the eight major mountains of the mountain range, which is flanked by Mikeno to the north, Bisoke to the east and Nyiragongo to the west. Ascending to the summit lasts 5-7 hours at most but hikers often stop mid-way (at an altitude of 3,700 meters) for the night in a flycamp.A delicious dinner and breaksfast is prepared on site.

After enduring the cold night and having early morning breakfast, we are ready to get to the summit. This final push takes only 1 hour but is the most challenging because the section from the camp to the summit is steeper and more difficult to navigate – especially if there is thick mud, strong winds and fog which reduces visibility. Once at the summit, the scenery is spectacular and beautiful to behold.  After getting enough of the great views, we embark on the 6 hours descent back to the starting point and then to the park office . Our driver/guide will be waiting to take us back to the Lodge for dinner and ovenright stay.

Today we can opt for Gorilla tracking at extra cost of US$ 1500/- or do the scheduled Musanze cave exploration.

Cave Exploration:

Musanze caves were significant during the ancient times as they were used by the local Kinyarwanda tribes as the venue for crowning their new kings. It’s usually takes between one to two hours  to complete exploring the caves. The caves consist of complex and numerous tunnels, many of which are home to thousands of bats. The bats can be seen hanging on the cave walls that have been darkened by smoke that has been partly trapped by the numerous cobwebs for thousands of years. Exploring the cave involves maneuvering though a 2 kilometer dark tunnel that consists of hardened rocks. After the exploration we return to our hotel for lunch and drive back to Kigali for dinner and Overnight.

Optional Gorilla Tracking:

The Gorilla tracking starts at 07:00am from the Park Headquarters in Musanze. We  wake up early and after breakfast we proceed to the park offices in Kinigi for gorilla trekking briefing. here are 10 habituated gorilla families that are available for tracking. We will be assigned one group. To get to a Gorilla family it might take up to 3 hours. After one hour watching and taking photos, we will head back to the starting point where our guide will take us back to the lodge for lunch then drive back to Kigali for a Rooftop dinner at Umbumwe and Overnight at Scheba

Today we take the day to explore Kigali City. We visit the city’s most fascinating sites such as the Inema Art Center, one of East African's major art galleries, housing a collection of artistsfrom around the African Continent, Kimironko market.  We also visit Kigali Genocide Memorial –  where we get to learn about the genocide that happened in Rwanda in 1994.

After lunch, our driver will transfer us to the airport for departure.
